I am curious about something that is happening after dialysis. My stomach gets upset and kind of feels weird. Is this because the water has been removed from it and it is too dry? The other question is about coffee. I think coffee is also upsetting my stomach. Is it the caffeine or the coffee itself? Could someone help explain some of this? My nurses at dialysis sometimes come up short with good answers.

Hi, could it be the milk in the coffee upsetting you. I'm a huge coffee addict. not sure about the upset stomach after dialysis though. You should check with your neph, write down the symptoms as they are happening and take it to him/her. that way you don't miss any symtpoms.

I'm always starving after dialysis. Try taking a snack and leave it in your car for the ride home. Grapes or crackers or something. Ritz has a new cracker out and it is only 35mg of sodium for 5 crackers. It is called RITZ with a hint of salt.
If you take your coffee black than get some of the non-dairy creamer. Only drink one cup.

Bill, I think jennyc has it right. Note when and what for each symptom. Everyone reacts differently. For example I get nauseated without coffee strong and black (probably have to feed my addiction). Also get nauseated right after dialysis starts for a few minutes. Often have to ask for Malox or whatever they feed you. After dialysis I am so thirsty and go straight for a cold drink. I do eat sometime during dialysis (nothing tastes really good anymore) like a bagel or an apple. Can't believe some of the things other people eat so, again, it must be highly individual.

Bill,
Carl had to give up coffee when he started dialysis. He would stop drinking it for a while and then try it again. Each time it really upset his stomach. And he doesn't use milk so it wasn't that.
He tested everything and finally narrowed it down to the coffee. Can't figure out why it was affecting him like that, but it did. :embarassed:
And he tends to nibble through dialysis. We eat dinner during his treatment nd when he is finished with that he snacks, too. Does your clinic allow snacking. You might try. If not, have a snack ready as soon as you get off. When we were in training, we had snacks waiting in the car for us.
Good luck.

I asked about symptoms the other day on the board, didnt get this though. When i started dialysis i used to get a strange stomach ache, not painful just a feeling, now i eat a little during dialysis and its gone, so like everyone said try that.
