Title: Hidden salt
Post by: RightSide on November 18, 2009, 05:21:29 PM
In the last couple of weeks, I had two unpleasant surprises.

I bought a package of plain frozen mixed vegetables--supermarket brand--from a popular supermarket here in Massachusetts where I live.  Not the seasoned kind or the kind with sauce, just plain mixed vegetables.  Guess what.  It had salt added to it.  I never bothered to check the list of ingredients at the store, because I never would have imagined that plain frozen vegetables had salt added.  But it did.

Today, I bought a package of plain white rice.  Again, not the seasoned kind or the kind with sauce, just plain white rice. Again, guess what.  It had salt in it.  I didn't notice till I started eating it.  Oh, well, I blew my sodium quota for today.

The moral is: These days, check EVERYTHING for added salt.  Who knows, they may be adding salt to bottled water next.

RightSide, you're absolutely correct!
Caveat emptor.

Most the big stores display the sodium etc. content on little signs by the product in the fresh vegetable and fruit section. In the canned section you have to read the label on the back of the can.It has to become a habit..just automatically check the content. Just becomes a way of life after awhile..The frozen products always has high everything you shouldn't have.

I have noticed that as well
and that is why I cook only fresh food,
buy "uncooked" rice which I wash thoroughly
before cooking, bake my own bread etc.,
renew the water whilst cooking my fresh vegetables etc.
I have been wondering why it is made so difficult
to eat healthy? I mean, here I am in a modern age,
cooking and baking like they did a hundred years ago
in an effort to keep my kidneys functioning
for as long as possible.

kristina,You are so right, cooking seems to take all my time up, but it tastes a lot better.

I also found about hidden salt when I bought "lemon pepper" seasoning.  Got home and discovered it contained not only salt, but MSG as well.  That was when I started reading every single label!

That is true, billibags, our own cooking does taste very nice as well.
We buy our vegetables and ingredients in many different shops and it is sometimes complicated and time-consuming.
Quality vegetables and fruit, salad, flour, ingredients etc, cost much more than the “pierce, ding, eat” ready-made or frozen food, “laced”  with lots of salt.
After all, we still have to cook our food and it does take lots of our time to do so.
It seems to have become very expensive and time-consuming to keep my kidneys functioning for as long as possible
and I feel sometimes as if I cook and bake as people have done hundreds of years ago, but I live in a modern age
and all I want to achieve, is just to keep my kidneys functioning for as long as possible.
Peleroja, I also read every label very carefully, quite amazing what some simple ingredients sometimes contain...
