Title: High HB
Post by: murf on November 11, 2009, 11:40:59 AM
For about the first three years  of h. dialysis, my HB results were 'normal' for a patient - about 100 mg. I took EPO and iron about once a week. In the last twelve months, my HB has shot up to be 135 after each monthly blood test. They have stopped the epo and iron, and at first, threw the lines every now and then. I have had two scans for tumors or cysts and no results to talk about. The doctors can't work out why my HB is normal for a non-dialysis patient but abnormal for a person in my situation. The only detrimental effect is that it streaks the kidney and makes my tubes 'sticky'. Does anyone have any answers?

He's an IHD member.  Locate him and click on his profile and you will see "Send A Message" or something like that.  It will be a private message.  On the page that shows all the Message Boards if you go to the bottom it will show you all the members who have been on in the last 24 hours or so.  Click on him there.

Actually 100 is a bit *low* for a renal patient. You really want to be between 110-120 (11.0-12.0 for US folks) for hemoglobin. Any higher can cause issues if aranesp is being given - but you're not on any EPO so it's probably OK, if a bit high. Strange though to go and stay so high when you're not on Iron or EPO. How are you feeling? lots of energy???

Had my blood tests back today and HB was 131. Now been ten months over 130. I don't feel any different when I was on EPO and iron.
