We were advised to take a protien suppliment. I wonder if anyone here has suggestions to that.. With fluid restriction, it seems tough to get a powder and that to his already limited intake, but if that what it takes so be it. Any suggestions here??? Thanks :)

Hi Boswife,
I use a product called "BiPro". I ordered it online, you can check out their website biprousa.com
A friend (also a dietician) recommended it, and I showed it to my renal dietician and she really liked it. Low Phosphorus, sodium, potassium, calcium...basically its just the protein! Also low calories and no sugar.
I don't have much of a fluid restriction, so I put it in my coffee or tea and you really don't taste it. Also great blended with ice and fruit. I know you can also bake with it, put it in things like oatmeal & pancakes, and mix it with your eggs.
Hope this helps :)

I was taking one called 'Protifar'. I got it through my dietician. You can add it to anything - as long as it's a bit fluid. So you could put it in his dinner if it was something soft. I usually put it in my coffee, or into desert if I had any. I've changed at the moment to a renal drink, but I don't have any fluid restriction at the mo - otherwise I'd be back to the powder. I hated 'wasting' my fluid on a yucky renal drink!

Be aware:
Companies are always changing their formulas, so check the ingredients regularly.
It seems that Muscle Milk powder as well as the Ready to Drink bottle is now over 1,000 mg of potassium in a 17 oz. serving.

There is a protein drink called Nepro made especially for dialysis patients. It is high in protein and low in Potassium and Phos. It also keeps me full for a long time. I take it to dialysis for a snack. Also have a gulp if I'm hungry. It does count as fluid. You can order a six pack to try it 1-800-986-8502. I order by the case. It is about $2 for an 8oz bottle. Cheaper than a Starbucks!

thanks rerun!! now, our problem is, he hates um ALL it seems and with the powder, i can just add the scoop to 2 oz of fluid and be done in a swig...Is the Nupro stuff at all tasty enough to drink enough to get it's benefits??? Thanks! will love to hear..

Yes, I do still use Designer Whey.
I use the "natural" non-flavored version, and add my own flavoring and sugar.
The flavored versions use an artificial sweetener, which I try to avoid on non-dialysis days.
I'm going to try to make ice cream (or something frozen) with the Designer Whey.
I'll post it in recipes if it works out well.

I'm glad I found this thread. I use to love meat, but it seems like I have to force it into my diet these days.

Well, I like it. It comes in 8oz bottles and you can order a six-pack just to try it. I like the Butter Pecan, but they have berry and vanilla.
