Title: Eating & Drinking During Dialysis & Dry Weight
Post by: MomInDialysis on October 21, 2009, 03:21:29 PM
This may sound crazy, but doesn't eating and drinking during dialysis, throw off your after-dialysis weight.  If your goal weight after dialysis is based on your "In" wt less your fluid removal, won't food & drink throw that off.  I worry about that because I am trying to encourage my mom to eat a small sandwich 1/2 way thru dialysis because of her diabetes.   ???

We always showed the tech what Jenna was going to eat or drink during dialysis and they would adjust the machine accordingly.

We can eat and drink at our unit, I'm not sure how in and out weights are affected though...sorry!

A half a sandwich and a sip or two of water won't mess it up.  Especially if you do it everytime.  It just becomes part of the equation.  I weigh in and then after I'm on I eat a pop-tart and an 8oz Nepro Protein drink.  Just part of my dialysis.  I don't add anything.

Be consistant.  I wear the same clothes and shoes everytime too to weigh in with.

Well, I  bring one of those squirt sports bottles that I fill with ice before I go to dialysis. just so I don't have to ask one of the caregivers to go and get me water. It seems like x-tra work for the already busy people and I seemed to get really thirsty if one or the other got busy and forgot. They won't allow food of any kind at my center. They made some excuse about choking, but choking is a possibility (although small) anywhere. But, I couldn't imagine a better place to choke than in a room full of health care professionals. I only drink one or two inches of my water during dialysis. I forgot my water on Monday and I didn't notice until my session was almost over.

My washback is calculated to include 400g for saline and 200g for my cup of tea and a sandwich. If I bring along a cake, my dry weight might go up 100g. No big deal.

That's pretty much what we do in our unit.

As Rerun said try to be consistent with dialysis - wear similar clothes (so you are weighing like with like) and take note of what you are taking in and you can adjust accordingly.

The other thing is - the only real issue is the fluid you take in. If I have a 200ml cup of tea(as I do) that's what counts. We also have sandwiches which I guestimate are around 150g, but if I come off 100g over again it's no big deal, specially if that's food weight rather than fluid.

If I have a second drink on D (almost never) I just adjust my UF goal by say 200ml to account for the fluid I'm taking in.
