Title: Have i been bad ?
Post by: KICKSTART on August 21, 2009, 08:37:14 AM
Ok you know the story of my switch from PD to hemo etc etc , and while all this has been going on ive got fluid overloaded by 8-9kgs , anyway im at the stage where if i lie down i cant breathe. So today i rang the 'nice 'unit im at for the moment for some advice or really to see if i could do a few extra sessions to get it off, but they have no spaces so it would mean me going back to the horrendous place (no way) Anyway bad or not , i have done some PD exchanges (using weakest solution) and ive pulled of more than a kilo !!!! and i can lie down fine. Am i doing any damage? i feel fine for doing it .

Hi KS,  I don't think using PD for the fluid will hurt and may help a great deal.  I am now having to supplement PD with one day a week of hemo for toxin clearance, but PD still works great for excess fluid! While you are waiting for hemo, try a couple of 2.5 bags and see.   Maybe you could do both like me and only have to go once in a while?

Hi Kickstart,( We will have to stop meeting like this) My husband went for his Hemo to-day, he had been really poorly in the night but he wouldn't let me call an ambulance. He could not get his breath and he could not stop coughing. The doctor at the unit was straight onto it, he has got a fluid overload caused by not taking enough fluid off. They have now dropped his dry eight and are going to give him an extra session to-morrow. (hope to God it works), its so scary in the night, day time you tend to cope with things but in the night it is awful. I don't suppose for one minute you are making matters worse by doing a manual bag, you are probably stopping more fluid accumulating. I would check with your unit to sort out your dry weight again don't wait until you are over loaded, it is scary. :bow;

Thanks guys ..billybags i didnt get overloaded by something i had done , my PD stopped working about 3 months ago but its taken the hospital this long to realise (despite telling them) and put me onto hemo , this is why im overloaded ! I have also not had a 'full' session of hemo yet or much fluid taken off , they like to do it very slowly. I did ask for extra sessions but they have no space for me unless i go back to the 'hellhole' this is why i thought i would try PD.

There was a lady here that did both for a while.

I think the only thing you might have to be careful of is having too much potassium removed between doing hemo and the PD and you might have to take in a little extra protein.

I would double check with your doctor to be safe.

Kickstart, I get what you are saying, when my husband was ill and hospitalized after having his tube out they got his dry weight wrong. On PD his dry weight was 75kilo and he kept telling the Hemo team that his weight was not 85killo thats what they were told by the surgical ward and so for a month that is what they have been going on, even though he keeps telling them it is wrong.Now because of the over load they realise that he was right and have now made the adjustments, his new weight is now 73killo because his appetite has not been good and he has lost a bit more . Some times they listen, some times they don't. :Kit n Stik;

As long as your labs are good, and your tecnique is good, should be fine.  They really do need to adjust your weight.  Good luck, and good job on taking care of yourself.  Many patients wouldn't have thought to do an exchange.
