Title: Stop heparin for minor surgery?
Post by: RightSide on June 17, 2009, 09:20:49 PM
I'm on in-center hemodialysis.

I need to have a sebaceous cyst removed from my back.  It will probably take a few stitches to close the wound.

Is it necessary to avoid heparin during dialysis, in the days after a simple surgical procedure like this?

I'm also going to be having a tooth extracted in the not too distant future, so the same issue is going to arise--is it OK to have heparin during dialysis in the evening after the tooth was extracted?

Heparin has a pretty short half-life in your system.

I would think having a cyst removed would not be bothered with the heparin.

The tooth may be affected by the heparin.  I'd ask your nephrologist.  He may have them give you half your heparin dose.

I am driving my dialysis nurses crazy with dental work. (I am pushing to get a bunch of work done that I have neglected in prpeparation for transplant surgery) The dentist wanted to do the program over six  months. I responded that she could take her time as long as it was all done within a month. We are almost done, and have completed most of the tough sessions.

My nephrologist didn't think avoiding heperin was warranted though he warned me that the nurses would want to do it to avoid the possibility of a 'mess'. Sure enough, they tried no heperin, using saline instead. They put 4 liters in to dilute my blood. Made for a crappy session. So we went back to normal heparin.

Since then, no abnormal bleeding. But they et pretty excited. Almost done.

The nurses at the dialysis unit  are the best people to ask regarding the heparin. They will discuss this with your Dr. About the denist visit my daughter always had to take an antibodic medication before she had dental work done. I would ask about that also.

Yes!  You will need to be premeditated before any dental work!    :thumbup;

This is mine:  Amoxicillin 500mg capsules
Take four capsules one hour prior to appointment.

Premedicated?  Premeditated might work too!

I had dental work done and told the dentist to hurry up through the appointments for the roughs tuff.  I told them I would not come back if they put it off for a long time.

Any time Richie had surgery (had a tumor removed from his jaw, the cath in his chest removed, pd cath put in) they were fairly major surgeries - but his neph pulled him off the heparin about a day or two before each surgery. just doing a saline flushes. but check with your neph, have them find out what all will happen in the surgery - they will be able to make the right call.

When Len was on dialysis, we stopped heparin and baby aspirin for at least 4 treatments (home hemo) and he was and still is premeditated for any procedure that involves blood or the chance of blood. Good luck.  :cuddle;

That's true:

Ode to the Spell Checker.

Eye halve a spelling chequer
It came with my pea sea
It plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
And weight four it two say
Weather eye am wrong oar write
It shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
It nose bee fore two long
And eye can put the error rite
Its rare lea ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it
I am shore your pleased two no
Its letter perfect awl the weigh
My chequer tolled me sew.
