Title: question on lab results
Post by: tyefly on June 06, 2009, 08:09:44 AM
 I have a question that maybe some one can answer here on lab results...  my GFR is now at 15 which can down from last month from 24......  my creatinine in my blood stay about the same 3.29 but my fun went from 35 to 60....  by my biggest concern is with my urine test.... my protein in  my urine has been increasing and was at 1700 and now it down to 208  and my creatinine in my urine has been increasing to 207 and has now dropped to 27.....   Looks like to me  my blood bun anc creatinine levels are increasing and my urine proteins and creatinine have decrease a whole bunch...... What does this mean....does this me that my kidneys are not taking out the protein and creatinine anymore... they are just taking out water.... is that possible...does this mean that my kidneys are failing me faster...... I was hoping that if my blood levels were going up and my urine levels were up too than there was a balance...but now looks like a trend to be very unbalanced....what do you all think.....

I'm not 100% sure, but I thought a nurse once told me that the less protein you eat, the higher your BUN will be.  I don't know what the connection is.  Hope someone else has a better answer for you.

Your GFR, which is the rate your kidneys are filtering your blood, dropped from 24 to 15.  So, of course your toxins in your blood will be higher and less in your urine.  Your blood is not getting cleaned.  Your are on a "low protein diet," no doubt, so your protein will be less in your urine.

Yes, your kidneys are failing.  You may still produce urine which is mostly water.  That is lucky.  Once you start dialysis you may stop producing urine all together and then you are very restricted on how much you can drink between dialysis sessions.  If you still produce "some" urine you are allowed to drink "some" more fluid.

You will probably go on dialysis when your GFR drops to 10.  Unless you start feeling sick before then.  Make sure if you are feeling nauseated and really exhausted to call your doctor.

Best of luck.            :cuddle;

oh heck    I thought maybe my numbers were going down to closer to normal for my urine and I was going to get better...... I guess that is not going to happen....  Its such a drastic change....
   I do hear that I have CKD  but the reality has not set in yet........  I am not on dialysis...  Heck  I dont even have my fistula put in yet......  my numbers have gone down so fast..... I am not even having a chance to learn about the diet,,,, the different types of dialysis, and I havnt been to my transplant class yet...(that is next week)   I am really pretty scared...... if this keeps up I will end up in the hosiptal iwth a catheder in or out of my chest..... I dont want that ......  I am eating almost nothing  and that is pretty easy,,,, drinking alot less that I ususally do..... really dont even think about food....It is so hard to go food shopping now..... There is nothing in the store that I really want to buy.... but I know I need to eat something... I look at so many things that use to be so temping   and now    hey  its no big deal..... That in it self is a real trip..... I sit and think about what I want to eat and cant figure it out.... so I usually grab a fruit or cracker or something small.....  I should have no problem loosing some weight this way.......

Dear Tyefly,
My Creatinine is 436 and the Urea is around 20. I haven’t got any physical signs of Uremia, such as swollen ankles, sickness etc. So I am managing ok so far. My diet is this: breakfast: coffee with milk, apple, half a pear, half a slice of toast with a little soft cheese. Lunch: asparagus (diuretic) a little toast with honey and a little bread with soft cheese and a cup of coffee with milk. These two meals I have every day. My evening meal varies and can consist either of a portion of rice, pasta (you can probably tell by now I am a vegetarian) or Couscous and a variety of vegetables and accompanied always with a generous green salad with radishes.  Three times a week I eat an egg. Through the day I also drink one mug of chamomile tea with sugar, one mug of peppermint tea with sugar, and two cups of black tea with lemon and sugar. I also have one glass of lime-juice ~(half a squeezed fresh lime with a little lime-juice-cordial) with water. I have heard the lime-juice is good for the kidneys. Of course I have snacks which may be another apple or a piece of bread, a little cake, quark but nothing outrageous. I do make my own bread which has no salt and I make my own cake with unsalted butter. With this diet I go along pretty well, keeping my weight (59-60kg) in check and I feel ok. Wishing you all the best from Kristina.
