Title: Any Coffee drinkers on Dialysis?
Post by: Tinah1968 on June 01, 2009, 10:13:27 AM
Hey IHD are there any Coffee Drinkers on Dialysis? I started Dialysis a little over a week ago and since I started Dialysis I can't seem to drink coffee in the morning. I LOVE COFFEE! I usually can not get to work without a cup of coffee in hand. But as of lately, it seems that the taste is awful so bad that it makes me  :puke;.  I thought maybe the coffee pot needed cleaning so I did that, Then I bought a different brand of coffee and that didn't work out for me either. It smells good but I am having trouble drinking it now. Has this happened to anyone else who drinks coffee or maybe with food that you used to like before??

I found that the ammonia metal taste in my mouth made everything taste a bit off when I first started D.  It went away as I became "cleaner", through better dialysis.  I stopped drinking coffee though because it carries a fair bit of potassium so I switched to tea.  It's probably OK to have one (maybe two) cups a day but I preferred to use my potassium up on fruit instead.

I only have once 6oz cup daily. (not anymore) But that is a huge boost for me in the morning... Then I just watch the rest of my food and drink intake after my coffee. I got my labs back and they were really good so still no restrictions on me right now...

Are you having a funny taste in your mouth at all Tina?  My saliva used to dissolve gum at one stage pre-dialysis and even early on into D.  Hope the coffee starts to taste good again for you.

I dont really drink coffee .. being british im a tea drinker  :rofl; But one thing i did notice way back was that 'metal' taste ,in fact i had a spell where the only food that actually tasted like food was , apples and milk ! Sometimes its your tablets though that changed the way things taste , i found after i had been on them a while it did go. Frusimide is terrible for making things taste awful  :puke;

Hang in there - once you've been on a while, the funny taste goes away some.  I had none of it while I was on home D.  Now that I'm back in-center, I'm getting it again.  All I want to eat is fruit and chicken.  That's not a bad thing, since I need to lose weight, but I'd like to be able to eat things I used to love.

I had stopped caffinated coffee before dialysis but started back in the hospital that week.  I think it got me through some rouch times.

I still have my required Starbucks Late as often as possible....however I have found out that I can not stand the taste of any type of alcohol.  I would normally have a beer or two once a week or a glass of wine with dinner.  I also can't drink any type of diet drinks(orange soda). I get a terrible sweet metal taste for hours afterwards.

I went off coffee for months - it was terrible.  However, it did eventually come back.  My worst one was that I went off wine!  Arghhhh.  Never really regained my taste for wine I have to say.  Still tastes a bit metallic.  The coffee thing will come back - might just take a bit of time.

I went through the exact same thing.  I LOVE coffee.  After I started dialysis, I still loved the smell, but the coffee tasted funny.  It was very frustrating.  I tried different brands, making it stronger or weaker - but it just didn't taste the same to me.  I just kept trying it occasionally, and it eventually tasted good again.  It took a few months.  I really enjoy my coffee again, my blood tests all come back OK, so I haven't had to take it out of my diet.  Thank goodness!

I have been a coffee drinker since I was very young. When I first started dialysis, I didn't drink or eat much for a bit, but after a month in the hospital I started drinking coffe again. Had to get use to using non dairy creamer though, but had my usual coffee in the morning, just not as much. My second dialysis center served 4 oz cups of regular coffee. I use to drink more than a pot of coffee a day too.

Just give yourself some time befor jumping the coffee ship and jumpig to tea  :rofl;

Atleast you don't have to switch to decaf like I was told too.

It is 6:00am as I read this post.  Yes, I have my 1 cup of coffee in front of me right now.  I am still new to D and I do have a slight metalic taste in my mouth as I finish the cup.  I used to drink MANY cups of coffee a day so it is probably a good thing that I am down to just the 1.
Title: Re: Any Coffee drinkers on Dialysis?

Ditto.  Down to one cup a day.  Never had a metalic taste.  Supposed to be on Decaf but why bother.  For a while I would mix decaf with regular.  Cardiologist said on decaf and that he, being a heavy, strong coffee drinker had found Star Bucks Decaf satisfying.  I  said onlly  rich Cardiologists can have Star Bucks every  morning.

I don't know if it is  available everywhere, but I found one Decaf called Community Coffee that I could drink.  It is from Louisiana and full of Chickory (which could be worse that caffeine).  Very cheap coffee but nasty enough  to be effective.  lol

I Iced Tea the only time I drink Hot tea is if I have a cold... So I am sticking with Coffee and hoping that eventually it will taste great again

You know, I totally forgot.  That's when I stopped putting creamer in my coffee.  I now drink it black.  The coffee just kept tasting funny, and I found that when I removed the creamer, the stronger coffee taste came through and that helped me get over that 'funny' taste after starting dialysis.   I totally forgot that.

When I was on PD, I had a cup of Starbucks coffee in the morning everyday.  Sometimes on the evening, after dinner.  Now that I had a transplant, I still drink coffee.

I had a cup of starbucks a couple of months ago and it was tasteless. I thought maybe that was dialysis related but maybe not :p

We have a great cafe at my work and they serve awesome coffee. Every morning at 10am I go with my co-workers for the morning cup. So lovely and I love the taste though i think I should ditch the regular milk for soy because of the phosphates as mine has been rising lately. Still I enjoy that and I make room in my fluid allowance for the regular cup... as much for the coffee as for the social time with my co-workers which I think is just as important...

I have never paid any attention really to the way coffee tastes. I drink it like medicine. I don't use surgar or cream, or milk I drink it black. If it's yesterday's coffee, I heat it up in the microwave. No matter what, I have to have it. Number 1 to help promote peristalsis and no. 2 to be awake. My wife uses creamer, and sugar. Kinda' makes it like a sweet hot coffee shake. I don't use it as a beverage. I use coffee like a drug. When I was young my mother told me that coffee was good with out any additives. . . I've been using it the same way ever since. I tried to "not drink" coffee when I first started dialysis, because of the fluid intake, but I found that I was more miserable due to the lack of coffee than I was due to the X-tra fluid. Oh wel, 8)l Ah'mona die someday anyway. 8)

Has any one tried the new McDonald's coffee drinks? One review in the Los Angeles Times called them
"caffinated milkshakes". I get a whole bean decaf coffee from my local coffee store. (not Starbucks)

I've tried those expensive ones from Whole Foods and Central Market.  Better than Starbucks for sure.  But not for the budget conscious.

I have since it's way cheaper than Starbuuck's. Not a big fan of them. I can just go down the street to my hospital or library and get better coffee for the same price and size that is freshly made.

Haven't tried Starbuck's coffee since they reformulated the roast of the beans. I couldn't stand their decaf coffee taste unless I was getting a latte with flavor added. My favorite is Dunkin Donuts decaf and for $2.12 I get an extra large cup (24 oz) which helps get my fluids in for the day I need. Mc Donald's decaf would be my second choice, but theirs is more expensive for just a large and I get less. Theirs is only 20 oz. I would like to go back to caffinated coffee, but my transplant center say's not to because it works the kidneys harder and raises the blood pressure. However the more people I ask post transplant, the more I think my center is alone on that since the people I have talked to haven't had to switch to decaf.

I'll drink coffee anyway I can get it. I switch between cream/sweet n low, sweet n low only, and just plain coffee. It's just my first cup as a kid was cream and sugar (drank my mom's Mc Donald's coffee while staying with her at ork  :oops; , then her chocolate milk shake too  :oops; ;D Then she told me to go downstairs and play in the arcade  :rofl;  Arcade = Game Room pre 1990's before pc games. We had to put quarters in machines or tokens to play video games, pinball machines, or the indoor bumber cars.

And no, Starbucks tasting bad has nothing to do with your tastebuds - they just make sh*t coffee.  I'm with Hurlock on the coffee issue - if you love your coffee it's worth a bit of discomfort!  And Chris I forget you're so young!  I'm not that much older than you (45) but there was no McDonalds when I was young.  Can you imagine it?  Ha ha.

But there was a Jack in the Box....
I grew up with Jack in the box! There's been no J in The B here in Albuquerque NM since we moved here in 2002. BUT! right down the street They're building one! Yumbo Yacks! Jack in the box greazy tacos. Thank heaven for small favors. It may Kill me, Jumbo Jacks and J in the B Tacos but I love'em. Can't wait. We didn't have MickeyDs until 1975. I didn't like them. At that time, a Burger King Whopper with cheese was $.45 Coffee at a burger joint or even a coffee joint just doesn't seem right to me when I can make a whole pot of FOLGERS at home for less than half of what a small cup at the coffee joint charges. Forget it.

That was before they hit their first million, and they were still edible.

I'm not a ice coffee lover. I just believe coffee is meant to be served hot.  ;D

Hanify, at that time coffee was 45 cents to and they only had one size. If you wanted decaf, you got instant Sanka packet. Mc Donalds HQ  I use to live by and their closest restaurant up the road charges a lot more for their food too ??? Maybe because it's in a snooty neighborhood? Mc Donalds on my way to college offers a smal coffee during the fall for 25 cents and I use to show up to class with 4, cheaper than my usual 24 oz Dunkin Donuts coffee. :2thumbsup;

When making coffee at home though, it never taste like when you buy it from Dunkin Donuts even though you are using the same beans, odd. I have a Foldgers decaf next to me right now though. ;D

I don't know ow to read or speak Spanish. I took German in H.S. because I knew a certain girl was taking it, plus there was a plan to go to Germany in the spring. Now I can only remember a couple words in German/Deutsch.

I could go for either a rasberry or blackbery latte or a white chocolate rasberry mocha

Again I have never drank Decaf. What for? To me that's like taking a placebo to cure cancer. I admit I do like the taste of coffee a little, but I drink coffee in the morning to help promote peristalsis. It works most of the time. I haven't drank any coffee this morning and it's twenty minutes and I have to go to dialysis. So, no coffee this morning unless I want to get off dialysis and go to the bathroom about 30 min. after they hook me up. #1 and #2.  :)
