Sentara Norfolk General to show footage of kidney transplant online

Tune in online Wednesday at 6 p.m. to watch footage of a living kidney donation transplant surgery at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The Webcast will be at www.sentara.com/explorehealth. Viewers who can't tune in that night can watch it later.

Footage from a previously taped transplant surgery will be shown as transplant surgeon Dr. John O.Colonna II and urologist Dr. Edwin L. Robey, both associate professors at Eastern Virginia Medical School, moderate the event.

Living donor transplant surgeries at the hospital are coordinated so that the kidney is removed from a donor and placed in the recipient in minutes, Sentara spokeswoman Cheri Hinshelwood said.

Other participants include past kidney donors and recipients and Dr. Harlan Rust, who cares for kidney transplant recipients before and after surgery as a nephrologist at Norfolk General.

Sentara has held Webcasts of surgical procedures before, but this if the first time they'll be using Twitter along with it.

Sentara will use the social-networking tool to share updates about the Webcast. Doctors and patients will take questions live over the Internet and through Twitter.
