Has anyone gotten their accessory vein(s) tied off? (come on, someone has had to!) What did the procedure entail? What scars were left behind? Inquiring mind wants to know! (me ;D). My neph at the access center has been suggesting it, and after today's dialysis I think I'll be calling him to call my surgeon.

Never heard the term used. Hopefully it's on Google on it entails.

Ahhhh, tying off a fistula.
-
I haven't had it done, but I think what it is - is veins that bleed off of your fistula. This leads to poor clearances or "recirculation" of your blood, meaning that blood doesn't actually make it through the machine.

Actually there was no answer from Kidneyoogle. Sorry Chris and thanks JoePaul.

I just had my upper arm fistula tied off because of age (13 years) and a graft placed in my upper arm. They usually do that and place in a chest catheter to use while your new access heals.
I have a four inch incision at the crease of my elbow that hurts a helluva lot less than this damn catheter. My procedure took two hours on a Thursday and I'm going back to work tomorrow.
If you have any other questions, let me know.

I have a fistula in my lower forearm. As I understood it, two stealer veins were taking blood from the main one, and it was hindering the size and flow of my fistula. A "coil" was inserted at the entry to each feeder vein to shut off the flow. This was done following an angioplasty and I guess using a wire to place them. I had a couple knotty and very tender areas for awhile, but 1-1/2 years later, only know approximately where they even are. They're about 3" apart. My fistula was about 6 months old at the time. Didn't start dx until it was almost a year old. They appear in x-ray pics as a little coiled wire setting in each location. Pain was equivalent to angioplasty. No add'l scarring. Don't know how common this procedure is, but I recall a surgeon from elsewhere was there to observe the procedure.

thanks yea the nephrologist said they are too big to be coiled...unfortuneately!
