Hi everyone. I am an RN and yes, I work for the dreaded Davita! I am in an acute, hospital based unit, which is a different animal. Those of you who are patients have most likely been in the position of needing a hospital at some point. I joined the board to hear more about your perspective. I have my own concerns about how the profit motive affects patient care, the biggest issue being staffing. Management wants to staff us like an outpatient center and it just cannot be done. We might have 6 patients one day and 26 the next. And all of them are very sick. Plus we get the middle of the night emergencies--the kid who drank antifreeze, or the college student who couldn't take it anymore and swallowed a bottle of aspirin. Mostly I just have concerns that we are not always staffed in a way to provide safe, competent care for you when you are most in need.
Since we are the only hospital around here with dialysis capability, I get the chance to meet patients from lots of different outpatient clinics. They are mostly Davita clinics because they own the market in this whole region. It seems some are excellent, and others not so good. Usually the smaller ones get better marks, I guess because the care is more personalized. I have been reading your posts and I am learning alot.

Hi Nancy!
Welcome! I actually go to a Davita clinic and have not felt it was dreadful (at least yet!). :) But feel free to send me a note through the boards if you ever have questions!

Welcome, Nancy. We love to have people in the dialysis field join our site. It is good for all of us to see it from both sides. I am sure you will have lots of information to share with us, too. Post often. Ask questions and maybe you can answer some of ours. We love nurses! My neph nurse does more for me than any of the doctors. :2thumbsup; Looking forward to more of your posts.

Its nice to see you here Nancy! I am in school to be an RN myself. Actually waiting at the moment to see I am in the nursing program at my school. I hope!!! I have an 9 yo on dialysis and I have a lot of gripes! Seeing you here makes me feel there are nurses out there concerned about how to make it easier on patients and families. Patients are not the only ones going through this! I do not want to be a dialysis nurse just because I live it and dont want it as a job! I am going to be a neonatal nurse, hopefully!! Anyway, I am happy you are here!
