Title: Can I take amoxicillin?
Post by: paddbear0000 on February 02, 2009, 03:57:17 PM
I was switched over to amoxicillin for a gum infection after the dentist originally prescribed me something that I couldn't take. Now I'm wondering if I can take the amoxi? The literature that came with it say to check with the doctor if you have kidney disease (well , duh) and all I seem to get by googling amoxiicillin and kidney failure are a bunch of sites to buy amoxi and random other sites about amoxi. Any info would be very helpful! The dentist prescribed me 500mg every 6 hours. I only weigh 112 pounds, and that seems like a lot. I am tired of dealing with the dentist. He wasn't my regular one (I had to go to an urgent care dentist) andeven though I told him all I could, he just isn't familiar with me.

You could ask a pharmacist. They are knowledgeable about interactions of other meds you may be taking.

There's sometimes an issue between antibiotics and phosphate binders, calcium-based or not. How many hours before/after binders.
As Romona posted, a pharmacists may have an answer.

Although I'm now back on PD, when I had my transplant I was given Amoxicillin prior to all dental procedures even routine cleanings.  Because I've now developed some heart issues I still take a bolus of four 500 mg capsules 1 hour prior to my dental appointment.  The amount I've taken has never changed based on my weight which has ranged from a low of 109 to a high of 142.  However if you're concerned at all about taking this or any drug, I wouldn't hesitate to contact your dialysis nurse or the doctor.  Better safe than sorry.

Sharon had a Nephrostomy tube from her kidney, out her back into a collection bag for 3 years, she had to have it changed every two weeks to as much as two months because of clogging, she was always given Amox before every procedure, her Neph was aware of it and never had a problem with them using it.......

My Neph always prescribe me Amoxicillin to take one hour prior to my Dentist appointment.  He says this is a safety precaution because study have shown the possibility of infection.  I've taken it 3 times each time I go for my 6 months general cleaning and I haven't had any side effects.

Just a little sidebar here  if you include -.com as a search term when you use google you will not get the .com sites.  That helps sometimes.

That's interesting. I'll have to try that out. I ended up asking my pharmacist like most people suggested.
