Title: Introduction
Post by: Kidneyboy61 on January 25, 2009, 07:44:15 PM
Hi everybody, My name is Charlie, I'm 47 Years Old and Live in The Columbus Ohio Area. I've Been A Dialysis Patient For a Year and A Half. The First year on Hemo, And now on PD. Before my Present Predicament, I was a Trucker, and Delivered Freight around the Lower 48. Now Except For an Occasional Road Trip to my In laws in PA, I'm stuck Here. Freedom Was a Big Part of my life, and I miss it Terribly, So,I Got my Motorcycle permit and am Thinking about the Open road on the Back of a Harley (Much to my renal Doctors Dismay). Actually it will Probably be a Cheap Piece of junk (I'll get the Harley after I Hit The lottery or Find Gold in my Toilet or Something). My Social worker at Davita "Turned Me On" to this Website, and It looks like a Fine Site. I'm not exactly The perfect Patient. My Diet Is Horrible, I still Like an Occasional Bottle of "Sam Adams", well, maybe more than Occasional, and I'm a Fast food Junkie. My Phosphorus Levels are Always Through the Roof, but I'm sure One Day I'll see the Light and Live on Tofu And Spring water Like My doctor wants me To. Like you I find Hemo Dialysis to Be Quite Uncomfortable. I used to Feel like I was A prisoner in some Goofy Jail, Where the Techs had Complete Control over You for 4 hours. I actually went there once after Attending The Columbus "Octoberfest", I had a Necklace on That Featured Tiny Plastic Beer Steins, And yes I had A "Few Too Many"but Hey I'm only Human. Man they were Mad ,But I don't Know whether They were Mad Cause I was Cockeyed, or Whether They were Stuck inside with 20 senior Citizens While The rest of the world Was Having a Party. Well I'm starting To Ramble, so , Nice to meet you All, and remember , Since we have extra toxins in our blood, I'm pretty Sure We are safe From Vampires. ---------------------Later

Heck I would be laughing my butt off if someone came in blitz/ cockeyed or something to liven the place up.  :rofl; :rofl;

Atleast with PD you have more freedom of what you can have to eat and drink compared to hemo. I would hate to meet your doc, I'd tell him where he can stick that tofu crap! Doesn't sound like a realistic doctor to say thatwhen he knows a little about your past.

When I was on dialysis, I did cheat to and I believe most of us do on occassion. Just get your phosphorus and potassium under control and you'll be ok.

Welcome to our community, Charlie!  Loved your intro!  I can see that you are about to join the group of 'characters' that we have in our IHD family.  :grouphug;  I understand what you are saying about freedom.  These days I am only a weekend traveller.  But I am so thankful for the many years of travelling I have already had and am grateful that dialysis is at least keeping me alive to see my grandson grow up.  Be careful about your phosphorus, though.  The eventual results of poor phosphorus management are not pretty.  Do you take your phospate binders regularly (the pot asks the kettle)?
Give your social worker a hug from me -  :cuddle;
Please take advantage of all this site has to offer.  Read a lot and post alot.  There is a loads of information here, lots of support and barrels of fun. (Our administrator, Sluff, is a Harley guy)
Looking forward to hearing more from you.

 :welcomesign;  Charlie.  Hope you'll post often here and I can join your doctor in saying "It's your life and your body, look after yourself buddy".  This stuff isn't easy but please take your binders and practice responsible cheating.  See, we care already and don't even know you yet.  You are of course welcome to ignore anything we might say, just like your doctor.

Since we have extra toxins in our blood, I'm pretty Sure We are safe From Vampires.

Kidney patients have said that they can go camping and the mosquitoes won't even bother them, so I guess it's the same for Vampires !!!

Its great that you joined , please stay in touch.

Welcome, Charlie!  It's good to have you join the family.

My husband Marvin has been a dialysis patient (mostly hemo) for the better of 14 years.  He's on home hemo now, and we have found that we love this modality.  Like Monrein said, try to practice "responsible cheating."  Over all these years, Marvin has found that if he denies himself the things he really, really loves to eat (but shouldn't eat), it just makes him crave them more.  He occasionally "cheats" and has small portions of those "no no" foods.  Of course, he gobbles binders like they're candy after he cheats (he says he can open his mouth to speak, and I'm tossing a binder or two in  :rofl; ).  You still have to find some "joy" in life, and if it's eating a LITTLE of the things you shouldn't eat, Marvin and I think that's okay.

Visit and post often.

You’re in inspiration already. I have never thought of cheating on my diet.  I am on home hemo now and just asked for a cold one. “Yeah right” was the answer. Maybe I need to practice my clamp cut and run procedure.
