Last year, on January 16, I started on my journey to get on the transplant list. The main thing they told me was, "if you're too fat and you're waiting for a cadaver kidney, you're gonna need to lose weight.) Wow, tough call since I was on PD at the time, and the dextrose in PD adds calories to your diet, lots of calories. So, I started jumping on my stationary bike, conveniently positioned in front of the tv. Every couple of hours I did another 10 minutes. Doesn't sound like much, you say? I gradually moved my daily biking upward from 20-30 minutes a day to 60-70-80. One particularly fine day I managed to actually bike 110 minutes! Even after getting out of the hospitals (yes, two) I got back on the bike the second day (ok, only 5 minutes and then 5 minutes several hours late). Now that I'm temporarily on hemo, it's been even easier to lose weight (13 pounds since the end of November).
So, as of yesterday morning, I am proud to announce that I have lost (drum roll, please) 50 pounds. Ta da!!! Not only have I reached the body mass index of 40 that UCLA wanted, I have surpassed it by more than 20 pounds, and I intend to keep going.

Good job!!!
You have every right to be so very proud of
yourself!
I find walking is a great way to firm up, and
can really burn calories.
Once you start, a little each day and add a
little bit more, you will be amazed at the results
the walking will do for you -
Once again - Congrats!

Excellent, more will power than I have. Watch UCLA on your quarterly labs. They didn't receive
my labs for two quarters.

Congratulations, Peleroja. What an inspiration you are. We have a treatmill and I hate to use it ... so boring. But I've always thought I needed to be on it for at least 20 to 30 minutes to get any benefit. But you've given me the incentive to try once more. I believe I can do the 5 or 10 minutes you talked about and hopefully increase the time as I get stronger. I've had a tendency to use the calories from the dextrose solution I use for PD as an explanation for my gradual weight gain of 20 lbs over the past 5 years. Now I know that it's not a valid excuse and I'm going to do my best to use you as my example. As I'm hoping for a transplant in the future too, losing weight can only be to my benefit.
Great job and keep up the good work!!! And I hope to hear that you too will have a transplant date scheduled very soon.

:bandance; Well done you - I hope this is also inspiration for any others trying to lose weight, as we all know it's simple to say, hard to achieve. Well done!

You rock, redhead!!!

Thank you all for your well wishes. To those who asked questions, here are your answers:
paul.karen - Yup, I'm definitely gonna keep going. As for exercise, I just rode my stationary bike 10 minutes at a time, several times a day.
kellyt - My only real tip for exercise is whatever you do, do it in front of the television. I can't tell you how many times I got lost in a program and discovered I'd done more minutes than I intended.
pelagia - I guess mostly it was the biking. I can't do long walks any more due to arthritis in my lower back. I also went down to 2 meals a day most days, breakfast and something else (lunner? dinch?) around 3-4 pm.
RedfromCanada - I have an appointment Jan. 22 with my neph and I think she will refer me back to the surgeon again for the PD catheter. We shall see.
To all - I'm not on the transplant list yet as I had to cancel my appt with UCLA on Dec. 1. They tell me they will put me on the orientation/interview list late March or early April. I'll keep you posted.

Keep it up. :bandance;

That is so awesome! I love the way you did just a bit at a time, then again and again. And look how it added up!! Way to go, you are an inspiration~~ good luck with the transplant list. They must be amazed at your achievements!!
