Title: Diet Online
Post by: Bajanne on September 21, 2005, 11:41:35 PM
I am at a friend's home in another island.  I forgot to bring my diet sheets with me.  I tried to find somewhere online where I could see what things i should enjoy, limit or avoid.  But I didn't find anything really helpful.  Does anyone know a place online where I could see this?  I just had my fistula put in, have no uremic symptoms as yet, and have to be careful since I do not want to have to start dialysis before my fistula heals.  I am diabetic and hypertensive.  I am told that my potassium level is not a problem right now.  I am taking Phoslo with my meals to deal with the phosphorus/calcium problem. Please give me some advice, someone. [especially about what I should avoid!]

It would be good to limit the high phosphorus and potassium foods, to get used to the renal diet.

High phosphorus includes milk, cheese, ice cream, nuts, and corn.  (The usual renal diet says to limit milk to one half cup daily-- so if you have milk, no ice cream.)

High potassium is most fruits and some vegetables-- oranges, bananas and tomatoes are high in potassium.  Most melons are also high potassium... cantaloupe is very high, watermelon is lower but must still be limited.

kayexelate to give you the trots to the bathroom if you can get the pharmacist to fill a prescription for it. this will help with controlling potassium. but keep lots of toilet paper handy until you get back home!
also, fruit to avoid is any star fruit or pomagranite juice or anything with tomatoes.

If you eat a SMALL portion of any food you should be fine. I basically eat whatever I what but just in small portions. For example I love Avocado but it is VERY high in potassium so I just eat 1/4 an avocado. Or for example I'll eat half a bananna. And I still eat my favorite cheeses. It's just about limiting yourself. HOWEVER do not take this as medical advice as everyone is different and different people can tolerate different amounts of food and not get sick.

Some EXTREMLY HIGH POTASSIUM FOODS (List not complete):

Bananas
honeydew melons
all dried fruits
cantaloupes
Potatoes
Tomatoes
Dried beans
Dried peas
Pickles
Artichokes
Avocados
Beet greens
Acorn squash
Butternut squash
