So sorry to hear about your Dad, my thoughts and prayers are with him.  Does he have a chest catheter right now?  That could have caused the infection.  My husband had about 6 infections from his catheter until his fistula started working.  His last catheter did cause a blood infection, he was in the hospital for a week.  It totally sucked!

It is probably "Gram positive Cocci", from your description of "sounds like Granda Cocksye".  It is definately from a catheter, but can be also from a fistula, or many other sources.  Very common, and very treatable.  However, those catheter infections are definatly BAD news, but treatable.  Try not to worry, hopefully they can get him the right antibiotic, that's the trick.

Roxanne,
I believe my Nanay had this "blood infection" if it is the same as being sepsis. She was treated a lot of antibiotics, but first they have to culture the blood to know what kind of antibiotic works. This can be treated but time is of the essence.
Lots of prayers for your Dad, please let me know his name.

love,
cris

I'm limited in my choice of antibiotics, because I'm allergic to the entire penicillin and cephalosporin classes.  (The last time I had surgery, the hospital had to scramble to find some IV antibiotic I could tolerate before starting the procedure.)

That's another good reason for me to get going on a fistula so I can get rid of this hemodialysis catheter--and its attendant risk of infection.
