BBQ choices highlighted in new kidney campaign
ABC - December 7, 2008, 12:38 pm

A national campaign is being launched in Melbourne today to encourage people to eat healthier food at barbecues to prevent kidney disease.

Kidney Health Australia says there is a link between obesity and the disease, which affects more than two million Australians.

The organisation's chief executive Anne Wilson says people should cut the fat content in barbecue food to reduce the risk of developing kidney problems.

"The link between obesity and kidney disease is quite strong," she said.

"So we need to do whatever we can to get those messages out into the public arena and get people thinking about their kidneys and also having their kidneys checked.

"We believe that highlighting the barbecue, being the healthy choice, is a good way to get people to think about what they're going to be barbecuing, looking at healthy options, and also raising awareness as far as chronic kidney disease is concerned in Australia."
