Hi everyone,
My husband who is on home hemodialysis for the last 2 yrs has developed a bad taste in his mouth. He says it is really intense and nothing he has tried has had any effect. Any suggestions? Any ideas what is causing this? Thanks

Yep. That's a classic symptom of uremia. But it shouldn't be there after two years on home hemo. For me it's a pre-dialysis thing and tastes like I've been drinking straight ammonia from a metal cup.
Are his clearances good? Is he eating too much protein?
Failing that, could he have a cavity or any kind of infection in his mouth.
Lemon drops can help temporarily with ammonia breath.

Don't know what would cause that. I have been on in-center hemo for 28 months and the only thing I have noticed is real sensitive taste buds. Anything salty sends my tongue through the roof. Hope someone comes up with an answer for you...Boxman

I'm going through a period of bad taste in the mouth and food doesn't taste right. I'm assuming it's the antibiotics they keep giving me to make sure the nasty pseudomonas critters don't come back. On the up side, I've lost 6 more pounds since getting out of the hospital! Ya just always gotta look on the bright side :rofl;

great peleroga on the weight drop....
ref to bad taste....the last 2 weeks of my old center my mouth was horrible...we found out they were putting the needles too close together so the blood was mainly circulating between the needles and very little was getting clean. The center I'm at now is very careful about placement and about the only time I have "the taste" is sunday evening and monday morning...since Sunday is my 2nd day off...otherwise I'm feeling great "even on 3 day" and hope it holds.
