Ok so I had been clotting for the last little while during treatments. I was supposed to go for a fistulagram, but my doctor said last night that i had good clearance and that it wasnt necessary anymore which i was happy about. Well they decided to give me more heparin to stop the clotting, which helped i guess but my concern is im getting way to much- i was getting 2000 and they upped it to 5000, and last night i REALLY could feel the effects of it, i bled from my needle as well... I was extremely dizzy, terrible headache, and my BP dropped as welll as my pulse.. now my question is is this to much heparin? should I try going back to 2000??
thanks!

karen
yesterday at D I heard an alarm go off like a kitchen timer
the tech said they were audited and no one was waiting five minutes after adding heparin
and now every patient getting heparin will have to wait 5 minutes before starting the machine for D
they should have been doing that all along
this is starting my 3rd year
they add it right after they hook you up and then wait 5 minutes before starting treatment

karen. It seems that jumpring from 2000 to 5000 units is a bit much. Len has a graft and I would give him a 1000 bolus of heparin when I put his needles in and then after 1 hour I would give him another 1000 and that was it. If it looked like the dialyzer was getting clotted after that I would use a 10ml syringe of saline and things would run smoothly. Also, Len was allergic to pork heparin. You might want to ask some questions. Hope you get it worked out. :cuddle;

They told me I am allergic to heparin. HIP it is called. I get a citrasate bath and have to take coumiden instead. So to much could cause problems like anything else...Boxman

Well I know someone screwed up something last night because as soon as I got the heparin I was light headed and felt sick. I realize ppl make mistakes but this is kind of ridiculous. I have noticed since there has been new ppl coming to work there has been more mistakes happening and that is scary..

Here, the standard heparin dose is a 1000 bolus, 1000 per hour and it turns off and stops 60 minutes before the end of the run.

Yeah, I only normally get 2000, but they decided to try 5000 which seems a bit excessive. Even Bijous my tech was like ''Woah, 5000??'' I should have known right then it was too much!

Heeh. I do a 6000 u bolus and a1300/hr pump.

Do you have to hold your sites long at the end?
