Title: "Table Tasty Salt Substitute"--anyone tried it?
Post by: RightSide on October 18, 2008, 07:57:04 PM
I found a website advertising a product called Benson's "Table Tasty Salt Substitute."  It's claimed to be both sodium free and potassium free:

"Our Table Tasty is a no potassium salt substitute and will not interfere with medications or dialysis. It's an all natural salt free seasoning.  You're not substituting one chemical for another."

http://www.bensonsgourmetseasonings.com/saltsubstitute

Anyone tried this?  Evidently it's a blend of natural spices that's supposed to trick your taste buds into thinking it's salty.  I'm sure it doesn't taste like real salt, but mixed into foods it may taste vaguely salty--and even that's worth something.

[Disclaimer:  I'm not affiliated with this company in any way, I just found this via a google search]

I would really like to try the free sample but sometimes I am leary about giving out my address to certain "unknown" websites.  Does anyone else feel this way?    Has anyone else ordered the free sample yet?

Hmmmmmmm, they keep telling you what "isn't" in it, but I would like to know exactly what "is" in it.

Here's the list of ingredients from the website:

Table Tasty No Potassium Salt Substitute Ingredients:  Nutritional yeast extract (No Candida Albicans, No Msg), carrot, red bell pepper, onion, arrowroot, lemon, garlic, celery, dill, paprika, allspice, sweet basil and parsley.

Not sure how it ends up tasting salty without salt - maybe it's the yeast, or possibly due to the inclusion of celery which tends to taste a little salty to me.

I pretended to order something and got as far as the secure ordering page.  You know it's a secure page because it says https instead of http.  The server-side of an https connection uses information, called a certificate, which can be checked, and validated, against trusted authorities. If that check fails, then your browser will warn you.  But that doesn't mean that they won't add you to their mailing list!

I don't get it.  Other than not having tomato, how is this different from Spike or Mrs. Dash?

OK, please tell me what Spike is?    Does it taste like Mrs. Dash?    I think the last time I tasted Mrs. Dash, I did not like it..............I say it like that because you know our tastebuds do change.

I'm pretty sure that SPIKE has MSG.  The kind I've seen also has salt, but maybe they make a salt free version.

I've been using it for three months.  NEVER have I found a salt substitute without potassium to taste so much like salt.  The company is reputable and the owner, Debbie Benson takes a personal interest in her customers.  They have managed to make a product that "fools" the taste buds into thinking it's tasting salt by using lemon and other herbs.  Absolutely a miracle IMHO!!!!

pelagia, Spike with the blue top contains no salt or msg.  It does contain tomato, orange peel and orange crystals (whatever the heck they are), and indicates on the label that 1/4 tsp contains 24 mg of potassium.  Since I'm usually on the low side with potassium, I use it pretty liberally and don't worry about it.  Spike with the red top contains salt.

Thanks Jonndad for the testimonial.  I'll probably try it.

Got my sample and tried a little on my tongue.  Was it my imagination?  I suddenly felt thirsty!  Gonna actually try it on scrambled eggs this morning (one of only three things I salt, the others being steak and pasta).  Will keep you posted.

I order it by the pound now so I NEVER Run out!  I can't believe the SALTY flavor this give food.  It's not good for cooking and it dissolves kind of quickly on hot food but so what?  AHHHHHH, the taste of SALT again!  :clap;

RightSide,

Just wanted to thank you for bringing up that Table Tasty Salt Substitute here on IHD.  I ordered some for my father a while back (he's the one on dialysis) and he loves it.  He called me today to find out how he could order some more.  So you did good, Right Side!!   :bow;

     Just finished my first bottle of Bensons Table Tasty salt substitute. It really imparts
a salt taste to any food you sprinkle it on. Works great when put on things like corn,
meat etc.
     Does not work as well when diluted in things like soup etc. All in all, very pleased with
product and will order more.
