Well I'm 17 and I joined onto this website so I could talk to people who are on dialysis or who know someone on dialysis. My dad is on dialysis.

My dad is 60 and he about 7 years ago my dad was diagnosed with throat cancer. He decided to do chemo & radiation for it. He found out 8-9 months later that the chemo had made it where his kidneys worked with only 30% function. They didn't start his kidney dialysis until a couple months after that. Ever since then he has been in and out of the hospital more times that I can count and/or remember.

Welcome. Your dad is my age. Sometimes dialysis can reverse damage done by chemo. I hope it happens for him.

I'm also you Dad's age.  I know my kids worry about me,too.  I am glad you joined us.  I hope we can help you, answer questions you may have or just give you a place to be a 17 yr old with a sick dad.  We are here for you.   :grouphug;    :welcomesign;

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Gosh daddyslilgirl - you've been through a lot with your dad!! I think it's great you've come to our community to try and find out more, and share your feelings with like minded people. That's a great attitude I reckon!! So Welcome... All the best wishes for your dad and you!

Welcome to our community!  I really appreciate your joining us.  Though I am nearly your dad's age, I too was Daddy's little girl up to 12 years ago!! (though my daughter kind of challenged that position!)  And I saw him through fatal kidney failure.  Wish I had this site at that time.  This is a place to find information, support, a place to vent when you need to, and even have some fun.  Please keep us posted on how  your dad is doing. Lost vision due to retinopathy 12/2005, 30 Laser Surg 2006
ESRD diagnosed 12/2006
03/2007 Fantastic Eye Surgeon in ND got my sight back and implanted lenses in both eyes, great distance & low reading.
Gortex 4/07.  Started dialysis in ND 5/4/2007
Gortex clotted off Thanksgiving Week of 2007, was unclotted and promptly clotted off 1/2 hour later so Permacath Rt chest.
3/2008 move to NC to be close to children.
2 Step fistula, 05/08-elevated 06/08, using mid August.
Aug 5, 08, trained NxStage and Home on 9/3/2008.
Fistulagram 09/2008. In hospital 10/30/08, Bowel Obstruction.
Back to RAI-Latrobe In Center. No home hemo at this time.
GOD IS GOOD

I am 55 and my son is also, like you,17. 

Your sentiments can help me get some perspective on what he must be going through as he deals with these issues too.  I look forward to reading more of what you have to say.
