Texas school district to let teachers carry guns

Fri Aug 15, 3:32 PM ET

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt.

School experts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

"We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?" he said. "It's just common sense."

Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.

Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.

The U.S. Congress once barred guns at schools nationwide, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, although state and local communities could adopt their own laws. Texas bars guns at schools without the school's permission.

It would be cool if they wore them in holsters on their hip. No more late homework or back talk!

Forgot Texas gun law. haven't talked to uncle in years. When living in Arizona at the time, you had to have it in a holster of some sort.

now we don't have to hide our guns
now we can keep our rifles in our rifle racks in our pickups
the sheriff is 30 minutes away from the school and guns would be right there loaded, cocked and ready to fire
wonder how many students we can shoot before we get administrators leave
I have seen teachers get upset and run out of the rooms crying but this is going to be way different
this world is  :urcrazy;
no after school detention--- just shot them and let them have a hospital stay
call the parents and say one more time and I will have to shoot little Johnny
when I can go back to teaching, I want to go to Harrold ISD
or wait first I'll have to get a master's in gun toting

we have been joking about teachers with guns
my ex-students were all hunters and had guns
I think some of them would bring a gun to school to have a shoot out with an administrator
"bring it on" ----- their attitude-- not mine
we had police officers in our school carrying guns and we still had a lot of violence
one kid blew up a commode and it was about 500.00 damage
but he had never been in trouble before so they went easy on him
and we did not want our school to be rated as a dangerous school so lots of violence is left unreported
I think all violence should be reported; parents have the right to know
