Summer fun

What does everybody like to do for fun in the summer? One of our favorite activities is boating.  We have 2.  A cabin cruiser and a speed boat.  Hubby build the speed boat (from scratch) the year before he started diaysis and he did the cabin cruiser about 5 or 6 years ago while he was on in center dialysis. We bought the hull for that one and he did the cabin and a few other things.  We are going to launch it either tomorrow or Tuesday for the summer. We usually go out in it whenever the wather is good for at least an hour a day. We usually have it in the salt water (Atlantic Ocean) but we had it in the lake earlier in June looking for the lake monster!!!.  Here are some pictures of the boat. I have some beautiful scenery pictures that I will post later.  I'll take lots more this summer too!!!  I have loads of pictures of the boat but they aren't scanned. I only bought a digital camera this winter.

Summer here is going to the beach (but it's about a 30 minute drive) and hanging out by the pool, playing ping pong, gardening, maybe go to some concerts, go to the X-games, eat and sleep.

We kayak in the saltwater creek behind our house. I also like to garden and then eat what I grow (yes, I could eat for a hobby...).  My husband plays guitar for a living, and for fun and relaxation, year 'round, day and night if he can.  He's an addict.

Great boat del!  I spent a lot of time on boats in the past, but not so much in recent years, unless you count the kayaks.

Summer here is the cottage.  We go to two very different ones.  My husband's family cottage which is a beautiful place on Lake Simcoe, more like a summer home than a cottage really.  Then our cabin on Eel's Lake, two and a quarter hours from Toronto, with outhouse, no lawn, just woods and deep lake with rocky shore, floating dock, no shower and one of the most peaceful places ever.  Cottages are great but a lot of work and stuff to maintain.  Barbeques, reading, swimming, being lazy, that's the pay off.  However, two cottages is actually one too many.

I also garden a lot both here in the city and at Lake Simcoe.  Also food...summerlicious is on right now, an event during which Toronto restaurants, even some of the very best ones, present special three course menus for fixed prices, usually $20 for lunch and $35 for dinner.  We usually do three or four restarants.  Also the jazz feastival down at the beach.

I've been to Canada a few times on fishing trips. Everything was always wonderful except for the mosquitos.

Ah, the mosquitoes...then there are also the blackflies if you go far enough north and then if you go really far north, like to the Arctic, add in noseeums, deer flies, horse flies etc.  One thing about being on dialysis, the mosquitoes don't at all enjoy me so I'm left alone.

We get all those kinds of flies here in Newfoundland, monrein.  The mosquitos we call "nippers" though. (I wonder why??)  I also like to garden -love it actually.  I have 5 flower beds (big ones) , a rose bed, and I have my rhubarb and onion patch.  We also have apple, pear, cherry, plum trees.  I like to spend time outside during the summer doing whatever (you can usually see my  sticking out of a flower bed. ).  We like to go for walks in the woods on nice windy evenings when there aren't any flies.  I also like to just sit outside on nice quiet evenings.  I have a swing that I like to sit in and read.  I enjoy just being able to relax in my shorts and t shirts.

Monrein the flies love hubby's fistula ( and any other part of him) .  he has lots of fly bites the past couple of days!!!  I think one tried to chew his foot off - there are bites all across the top of his foot!!

Yes monrein the "nippers" do go after him too!!!  They drive him nuts!!  Here's some pictures of some of my flowers that I have fun taking care of in the summer. I told you there were flower beds underneath all thAT snow last winter!!

My family and I are leaving for the beach this month for a week.  We normally vacation in Sanibel/Captiva Island, FL.  But this year we are going to Pine Knoll Shores.  Never been but I heard is small and quiet.  We are also going on ferry rides to Carrot Island to see wild horses and Cape Lookout (black/white diamond lighthouse).  I love lighthouses.

This is also my 1st real trip since I started CAPD.  I'm still undecided about swimming even though I was told by my Dr and Nurses I can swim in pools and ocean.  I just don't want to take the risk.  Plus, I'm having difficulty finding Tegaderm large enough to cover my entire exit site.  The catheter takes up so much room.

I hope everything works out.

Rookiegirl -- I absolutely LOVE the Outer Banks of NC.  Pine Knoll Shores is good -- make sure you go to the big aquarium there -- it's a touch-and-feel aquarium.  My dad was stationed on Cape Lookout (with US Coast Guard) when I was born, and I go back as often as I can (it's about a three-hour trip for us).  Make sure you take the boat ride over to Lookout.  Also, there's a great museum there at the place where you ride over to Lookout -- it's great if you like history dealing with the sea, ships, lighthouses, etc. (it's that kind of museum).  The best "eats" are at Harker's Island, but watch out!  Those Harker's Island folks speak a totally different language (the accent is so different).  Beaufort also has some pretty good eating places (what's the name of that place I love there?  Is it the Sanitarium?  Strange name, great food!).  While you're that close, you MUST, MUST travel up to Ocracoke (Island), Cape Hatteras, Kill Devil Hills (place the Wright Brothers flew that first time), and Manteo (home of the greatest outdoor drama in the world -- "The Lost Colony" -- a MUST SEE).  I'm so jealous, Rookiegirl.  Can I go with you?  You'll have a ball -- so much to see and do.

(P.S., I'm like you -- I wouldn't risk the swimming.  But, ohhhhhhh, to stick my feet in the ocean at the Outer Banks again...I'd give anything.)

For the last few days I've been swimming with the dogs in Lake Washington every afternoon (I've been dog sitting for the last couple weeks). I have a life jacket for Cairny - he stays out as long as I'm out - I use him as a kick board. Swimming with the dog is my favorite summer activity - I think about it in the winter.

I'm growing food this year too - tons of lettuce coming in, snap peas, carrots, pole peas, artichokes, potatoes, corn, spinach and I have one cantaloupe that I started from seed and finally looks promising and both of my tomato plants are thriving but it'll be a month or more before I'm eating fresh tomato (daily nocturnal has its advantages) . I also have an amazing grape vine that is set to produce buckets of grapes - white concords - that were very tasty last year. And my blueberry bush is loaded, they should be ripe in a week or so.

I think we need a thread on growing things.  I am off to start it.  So all of you guys come and let us know what you are growing.  maybe you can give me some advice.

this summer what I like to do and what I can do are two differant things. This summer taking the para-van to the mall or a restaurant and watch the world go by has been fun. Going to Brewer Baseball games has been fun. in fact anytime I get to leave the house has been fun accept when I get dropped at dialysis. The summer of Mark...Boxman

Petey - thanks for all your suggestions.  I will definitely look into doing most of what you mentioned.  I'm really getting excited.  I hope the weather is good that week.
