Oh my... that party sounds nice. So sorry I missed it Dan (the man).

We went to a live concert in an open arena (outside under the stars under a full moon and millions of stars) we boogy'ed until way after 12.  I was hurting all over the next morning , I think maybe the chat room party might have been nicer  :rofl;

What's past is prologue

« Reply #21471 on: January 02, 2010, 11:27:16 AM »

Des! So glad to see you back and hear a bit about your trip, you party girl, you! Let's see those :pics;

I would very much appreciate advice on a delicate issue, if anyone has any to spare. I received a letter this morning from a psychiatrist I had been seeing for a few months. She canceled an appointment with me in early October, and I never bothered to reschedule. The letter informed all of her patients that she will not be returning to practice - she is dying of cancer. She never mentioned a thing about this to me (sign of her professionalism) and the letter was written in a tone of acceptance and gratitude for the life she has lived.

I wanted to send her a card - I was thinking of a thank you card. She also always expressed interest in the transplant and clinical trial, so I was thinking about giving her a very brief update on where I am in the process - this will also serve to remind her which patient I am. Do you think this is appropriate, or tacky? Any thoughts on how to handle writing a goodbye to someone who is dying and whom you do not know outside of a clinical setting?

Cariad, I think it would be most appropriate to send a card like what you described. In fact, because this therapist opened the door with her own letter of explanation, I would think she would very much appreciate hearing from you. It sounds like she is tidying up her life and knowing that she was of help to someone helps with closure, I think.

I am not in the same situation (dying), but I know how I feel when  former student or parent lets me know how I have affected them.

Best wishes for you.

I think it is a lovely idea, Cariad.  Wouldn't we all like to know we touched another's life or helped someone?  I would rather get a lovely note now instead of my family getting a sympathy card after I die.   I think she will be very touched.   And good for you for thinking of this nice gesture

Definitely a good idea Cariad.  Speaking a s person who has cancer I know I am happiest if people still do the things they would have always done - if you know what I mean. I don't like if when people shy away from the topic.  it's a lovely idea and she'll love to hear how you're doing.
