One of them, the vista machine will not play movies from disk (only from dvd) or it plays but with no picture.  You just see the visualizations and hear the sounds.  Same movies play on the old computer (XT).

I'm thinkg it's a file association problem. You have to go into Windows Media Player options to select all media type files to play. However, Windows Medica Player Does not play all media types depending where you get the file from..

I have to bring Media Player up and give you step by step instructions though to get to the media association file selector.

the mains ones not playing are avi (files I stole from Bit Torrent)  The avi association is still there just as it is on the desktop ...  They play on the desktop and all I did was copy them to a usb memory sticck and move them over to the laptop.  Michael put on something called VLC which he says will play most anything.  Yes it will play the avi.... and the laptop WMP will play movies on CD...  I have everything I need but I hate not being able to do both.

ell the way I was able to do it in XP I can't do it in Vista. I can think of one other option, but maybe someone knows something more.

My sesecond thought is to uninstall and reinstall the Media Player and then when it ask you which files would you like Media Player to play, choose all for movies and audio.

Morning all..  thanks for help last night Chris.  I'll figure it out someday.  In the meantime I had a way to watch everything.  Just need some new movies.  (Something bloody for dialysis today)
