I told him we didn't have to worry about strangers as much, everybody looked out for each other.  He thought for a bit and then said he wished it was like that now.

That's one change that really makes me sad. When I was a kid we ran wild everywhere without fear. Of course it's still like that where I'm living now -- it's a tiny island and kids don't have to worry about strangers because they know absolutely everyone. Last year a cougar swam over and for a few weeks the kids here got to experience life as city kids live it -- escorted by adults everywhere.

Which reminds me: remember when a cougar was a wild animal?

In Michigan, they still are wild.  The question here is "Remember when the DNR didn't believe anyone when they spotted one?"  For years, the Department of Natural Resouces insisted that cougars were extinct in Michigan and that people were just seeing large bobcats.  A few years ago, one of the DNR team saw one and took pictures - changed some tunes around here!  How dumb did they think we all were, that we couldn't tell a 40 pound bobcat from a 100+ pound mountain lion?

Here kitty,kitty!

"Asbestos Gelos"  (As-bes-tos yay-lohs) Greek. Literally, "fireproof laughter".  A term used by Homer for invincible laughter in the face of death and mortality.
