Nala - Mom's Cat

« on: March 17, 2008, 08:04:34 AM »

 :rant; I am so angry right now. Last night my oldest son showed me his upper gums. The very top is blue! which as I asked 'Dr. Freakin Google' (remember him?! lol) is a side effect of being on minocycline too long. Talked to the derm today and was livid that they hadn't been monitoring him closer. The script effects does not state this. The only way I found out is when it happened! So he is off and it should go away. Will be watching closely. Not only can mino turn your gums blue it can turn your teeth gray! While the blue is supposed to go away once you stop mino, the teeth remain gray. I just hope we stopped in time. I asked the derm what happens when I get a possible huge bill down the road related to this. No straight answer there. I paid out a lot of money to straighten his teeth too!

The derm had the nerve to say to me 'he was here in February did he mention it then?' He was there and they discussed the fact that I thought his teeth looked a bit gray. Okay, wouldn't they look a little deeper in his mouth? I told her, 'he does not know to put 2 and 2 together, it's your responsibility to watch for these side effects and let us know!' She said ' it happens so infrequently.'

Here we are trading one problem for a worse one. I hate that with any med - you never know.

I'm so sorry about this! I don't have any experience in this particular situation, but I do with other drug's side effects and doctors who don't do their jobs! I hope the blue clears up. I feel so bad for your son!  :cuddle;

There was an article and, pictures of the man, a few weeks ago in 'People Mag' who had turned blue.  Why would
Drs. precsribe something they know could have these effects?  Who wants to go through life blue or with gray teeth? :banghead; :banghead; :banghead;
Pray it clears up.

talked to the pharmacist yesterday and they'd never seen it, nor really heard of it. He looked it up and found that indeed there is discoloration of teeth, gums, nails, and skin! My son was working and I was going to have him come to Pharmacy and show it but he was too busy. I took a picture last night because I want to track how it looks. It came out a bit fuzzy so I'm taking another tonight. He said he just noticed it a few weeks ago. I'll keep you posted. At least when he smiles you can't see it.

ODAT, I found these side effects on WebMD. I've had doctors tell me that all medications carry some side effects. Well no shit. They should tell us what to look for.  :banghead;

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lightheadedness, dizziness, unsteadiness, drowsiness, mouth sores, or cough may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: sunburn (sun sensitivity), muscle pain, difficult or painful swallowing, change in the amount of urine, pink urine, brown/gray tooth discoloration, blue/gray/brown discoloration of the skin/lips/tongue/gums, numbness/tingling of the hands/feet, unusual fatigue, new signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills, persistent sore throat).

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: hearing changes (e.g., ringing in the ears, decreased hearing), easy bruising/bleeding, headache, vision changes (e.g., blurred vision).

This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacteria. This condition may occur while receiving therapy or even weeks after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have the following symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, or blood/mucus in your stool.

Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, skin lesions/sores, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing, new or worsening swelling/pain in the joints, swollen glands, chest pain, fast/irregular heartbeat, severe stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

It's amazing that after all that was listed there is still a disclaimer at the end saying it's not a complete list.

Why can't they get rid of some of the more horrid side effects? Two steps forward, one step back. thanks for looking into that for me (us) Petey!

 :thx;

(Ohhhh, I really want to use the new butt smiley, but have to wait until it's appropriate... lol)

If only that were possible with some medicines... then Prednisone wouldn't be the double edge sword that it is.  ::)
