The Florida Senate wants public school students to pull up their pants. Lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that could mean suspensions for students with droopy britches.

It won't become law unless the House of Representatives passes a companion measure.

Florida could join several southern U.S. towns and cities that have passed "saggy pants" laws aimed at outlawing what some teenagers consider a fashion statement -- wearing pants half way down their buttocks, exposing flesh or underwear.

Supporters say schools sometimes don't properly police dress codes and parents are often "under aware" of what their kids are wearing to school.

Critics say the measure is unnecessary, arguing that appearance and dress codes should be the responsibility of school districts and parents.

Despite being the butt of jokes, the bill's sponsor, Orlando Sen. Gary Siplin, a Democrat, has said the fashion statement has a back-story -- it was made popular by rap artists after first appearing among prison inmates as a signal they were looking for sex.

"All we're trying to do now is trying to inform folks that we have a fad now that does not have a very good origination," Siplin said. "We're trying to make an example in school," he added, saying it would help students get jobs and a degree.

The Florida city of Riviera Beach passed its own saggy pants law Tuesday, with a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail for repeat offenders.

That's amazing I wouldn't have thought you could legally legislate against a certain fashion if that's what you could call it. The young men in Britain adopt the same look and sometimes I think, one little tug and they [their pants} would  be round their ankles

I have a big problem (I know, I know - it's the liberal in me...)  The government cannot start controlling the way people dress.  Schools can, yes.  I am all for dress codes...  BUT, when a government starts controlling the way a person dresses, that is getting to big brother for me...  think of other countries that have government mandated dressing, umm...  Iraq?  Iran?  It's an extreme I know, but it's under the same principle.  Imagine if they had done this with mini skirts, hot pants, jumpers, bikinis -- people were outraged when these fashions started, but then time passed.  It's not a fashion I like, but we as a nation have a constitutional right to dress and act as we please within the law.

I agree Beth. Fads come and go. Legislating against what we call "diaper pants" when guys wear their pants so low, seems like a waste of energy. Are the fashion police going to issue citations?
When I was a teenager we wore low jeans with patches and embroidery, and I know parents were worried that we were going to run off to Haight-Ashbury, live on the streets and smoke pot all day. But it was a generational fad, replaced by yet another fad.

I can see banning the droopy pants in school but how are they going to enforce it in public.  Are they going to ban very, very low cut fashions for women that looks like the boobs are going to pop out at any minute.  What about bikinis especially the thongs!!  I can see banning it in buildings like schools, etc but when you say to make it law that they are banned everywhere that's infringing on human rights. I hate those droopy pants and wish they would go out of fashion.  When we were growing up we ore things that older people probably thought was just as awful!!!  Just my  worth.

Right, so they are going to change the fashion from a dopey look that will eventually fad on its own into some sort of political statement about freedom of expression that will never go away?  Uggh.  Parachute pants looked just as dumb - that passed.  Wearing a rosary for a necklace annoyed a lot of religious people, but that passed when Madonna moved on.  It's a fashion statement - ignore and it really will go away.  Focus on it, and make it a big issue, and it will just stay around longer.

Let's see, I went thru the bell bottom era, the holy jean era during school9both bad fashion). Droopy pants makes me think WEDGGY TIME   Seems each decade has to have a bad ritual of jean fashion.

I already cured my female off spring of that  (yep.. kept giving her major wedgies!!- i can.. im the mom!)
