an update on leg
«
on:
January 09, 2008, 07:57:36 AM »
went to see surgeon yesterday for 3rd post-op visit.
he released me and said to come back if I have a problem.
gave me a prescription for a stump shrinker which is supposed to help
mold my stump into cone shape.
then I can go to get fitted for prosthesis.
good news. I just hope it is not too difficult to learn to walk on one.
physical therapy people will come out to help.
said I will start using a walker.
don't know how long it takes to get prosthesis.
have appt. next Tues. for fitting.
Looking forward to driving, walking, playing with grandson.
I have so much to be thankful for.

What we can't cure, we must endure,OB. Seems like you are doing a great job of enduring. And I know it hasn't been easy. Good luck to you, my prayers are with you..

Don't know if you recall my telling you about my brother-in-law going through the same thing. He said to stay on top of the skin condition on the stump - easier to prevent a skin break down than to heal one. They may have to adjust the shape and the padding you use several times but be patient they will eventually get it right. Also, don't get discouraged on the first leg they give you. Just make sure it fits well and keep going back until it does. The temporary ones are not nearly as good as the permanent one you get in several months, to a year. My BIL hunts, fishes, works around the house, cuts grass, etc. almost as easy as he did before, and the prosthetic leg and foot don't hurt like the other one does.
