Man leaves $50,000, car to waitress

For nearly seven years Melina Salazar did her best to put on a smile and tend to the every need of her most loyal and cantankerous customer.

She made sure his food was as hot as he wanted, even if it meant he burned his mouth. And she smiled through his demands and curses. The 89-year-old Walter "Buck" Swords obviously appreciated it, leaving the waitress $50,000 and a 2000 Buick when he died.

"I still can't believe it," the Luby's cafeteria employee told Harlingen television station KGBT-TV in an interview during which she described Swords as "kind of mean."

Swords, a World War II veteran, died in July. But Salazar learned just a few days before Christmas that he had left her the money and car.

She was probably the only one he had in his life. Loneliness breeds grumpiness.

Just goes to show that being kind and helpful to others sometimes really can pay off! In this case, financially.

K, this is going to sound like blowing my own trumpet, and it was only a small gesture on my part, but it did make me feel good about myself.

Today in my area it was 42 degrees (that's somewhere near 110 in farenheit). A guy had broken down on the side of the road not far from my house. So I continued home, filled up a bottle with icy cold water and ice cubes, and took it back to him. I offered to call someone, or else go for a drive for oil or car parts if he needed them.

As it turned out, he had his own mobile phone, and was awaiting the Roadside Assist company, but in this weather it's usually a very long wait (hours, sometimes), and there was no shade where his car had broken down so the bottle of cold water itself was a huge enough relief to him. He seemed very surprised that someone would even bother, but I would hope someone would do the same for me in those circumstances.

I believe good deeds, no matter how small, pay off. This thread is proof (not that I'm expecting $50,000 to come my way any time soon lol).
