Neurogenic Bladder Question

I notice on Okarol's post "Causes of Kidney Failure" that someone checked Neurogenic Bladder.

I have a friend with a neurogenic bladder. Nineteen years ago she had surgery for endometriosis & has had to catheterize herself ever since.

In what way can this cause kidney failure?  If anyone has any answers I would really appreciate the information.

My daughter Jenna has a neurogenic bladder. Because the nerves don't send the info to the brain that the bladder is full, the patient doesn't sense the pressure building. It is that pressure that damages the kidneys. Jenna self-caths 4 times a day. She had to have her bladder made larger (larger volume = less pressure) to qualify for a transplant, otherwise the same thing would have happened to a new kidney. No one knows what caused this bladder problem.

My friend, Roxanne, has frequent bladder infections no doubt because of self cath.  A clean procedure, but certainly not sterile.  Seems she's always on Cipro.  I thought the danger would be from a kidney infection, never thought of pressure. Makes sense.

Because self-cathing does create the presence of bacteria, they give Jenna antibiotics twice a week, to control any increase. It seems to work fine.
