My daughter is watching the Wizard of Oz. I remember my mom gathering us into the livingroom to watch this classic movie. I really didn't like the flying monkeys. I tried to pretend I liked the movie (it seemed so important to my mom). The monkeys don't seem so scary now. The special effects are not like they are now. It always seemed to be on around the holidays. Is there a movie that is a special classic for you? I like "It's a Wonderful Life". It puts me in a holiday mood.

It is one of my favorite movies decades after I saw it for the first time. When I was a kid "The Wizard of Oz" was shown just once a year and it was always on CBS. What really made it stand out was that for many years it was the only color program that would be on CBS all year. The color in that movie is gorgeous. The poor actors though were sweating under intense lighting that would literally melt the makeup off of them.
Very slow film stock and slow optics in the few technicolor cameras that existed then required enormous amounts of light. There is alot of trivia and lore around about the making of that movie. One bit I remember was that the producers were at a loss about what to do about the yellow brick road. They solved that problem by visiting the local hardware store and buying a ton of yellow paint.
There are also a number of scenes that were cut from the original movie to reduce the running time. The DVD version of the movie has some of those scenes in their entirety and where footage doesn't exist still shots are used with the original soundtrack.

I love all the movies that come on during the holidays EVERY year... such as Wizard of Oz, Rudolph, and the Grinch....
Another thing about the Wizard of Oz... a guy hung himself in the background during the scene where there on the edge of the yellow brick road and the forest and right before the wicked witch comes on top of that lil house and throws fire at the scarecrow... I believe its cut out of the edited versions now, I have the one with it tho... interesting.

Wizard of Oz--my Mom would have us all watch it together and she always made a batch of fudge. Amazing how strong childhood memories are. It Is A Wonderful Life--must watch it several times during the holidays. And Chevy Chase in, oh shoot, what is the name? With all the Christmas lights on the house, tree catches on fire, relatives over for Christmas?? Reminds me of some of my relatives during the holidays! Where is AlohaBeth when I need her memory?

My son saw The Wizard of Oz for the first time last night. I didn't know if he would like it since it was an old movie, but he really did. It was nice to see him enjoying it.
Has anyone tried watching the beginning of Oz, volume turned down on tv and listening to the entire Dark Side of The Moon cd? It's weird how it just goes together.
I love all the caroon classics, especially Frosty The Snoman

Nina, nothing wrong with the new version of Grinch, just like my classics, I guess!!! I had heard that about The Wizard of Oz. Apparently there are lyrics in there that mimic the movie, too!

I loved Wizard of Oz as a child but I used to have nightmares about the Wicked Witch of the West. That laugh used to scare the s**t out of me!

Every single year I have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart. He's one of my favorite actors of all time and I always think back to my worst days on Dialysis when he's at the bar wondering if he should take his life. And the massive amount of elation he feels when he gets his life back, I've been there too.
Such a great film on so many levels. When it was originally released critics were mixed. Today, thankfully, it's considered a classic.

A Christmas Story absolutely!!
My son saw The Wizard of Oz for the first time the other night. I didn't think he'd like it, but at 9:30 when we still had 45 minutes left, I was begging him to let us go to bed, and he wouldn't go until the movie was over. I guess he liked it!
