I remember that catalog!! We looked good back then!!  Seriously :rofl;   Even had the lovely matching shirts --red gingham!  Did I really admit that?   In 30 years people will laugh at what we wear today-----like the huge pants/boxer look.  Thanks, Karol--that was really funny and can't wait to show my family.  My sons will say they were just like that little boy with the big belt!  And white socks with a strip at the top that you pulled up to your knees! Yeah, my boys were so fashionable! :rofl;

My grandmother has a 50 years supply of Penny's and other catalogs in her basement.  Don't ask me what she's saving them for - it's a depression baby thing, in case she ever can't afford t-paper, I think.

The 70's have a lot to answer for.

And MY mom has a stack of Redbook magazines from the 1960's.  I think she re-reads them from time to time.

Some of the advertisements in those old magazines are pretty funny. My friend Rebecca mats and frames them - they are really fun to see.

I have an old Puss N Boots canned cat food ad from the 1950's framed. Very evocative, I remember the cat food cans from my Mom's two cats when I was a little kid.

Rob showing off his pot of gold!

« Reply #11 on: November 08, 2007, 05:39:03 AM »

I was born in 1970 and I remember the funky outfits my Mother put me in.  She thought that Purple & Green made a beautiful color combination, I have a few photos to prove that.

I had the ever lovely & practical Dorothy Hamil hairdo.  If there was any hairstyle that made a girl look like a boy, that was it.  We also had the avocado green kitchen and big ass flowery couches.  We were a total 70's family, complete with 3 boys, 3 girls and a dog.  Brady Bunch eat your heart out!

I read an interview with Dorothy Hamill where she talked about that haircut.  She hated it.  Her mom made her get it because she got sick of fussing with long hair that wouldn't stay up during the skating competitions.  DH offered an apology to all the girls forced to get one who hated it as much as she did!

Hehehehe - I had one too!

That stuff is not nearly as funny as walking through the mall looking at kids (and some adults) with the crotch of their pants at their knees, their underwear hanging out and twenty pounds of gold chains.  I saw a kid dressed like that one day with a job application in his hand.  On another occasion I was looking at a young lady who was wearing an extremely short skirt and a bare midriff.  She noticed me looking so she pulled her skirt down only to reveal her hairline. Up or down something was going to show.  She walked away.  I can only guess that kids change after they leave the house because I can't imagine a parent allowing that kind of dress.  I must be getting OLD!

the only thing i can say about the 70's is we apparently didn't know any better and the people who designed fashion and didn't give us decent choices should be put behind bars and kept there. in fact that still applies to much of today's fashions.

Geeeesh, glad I wasn't dressed like that kid in that ad. I was born in 1971 and never had a belt that big thank god! Although, I did have other hideous clothes though. Glad I only had a couple pairs of corduroy pants, I hated those back then. O0

I can honestly say that when I turned 19/20 I was very attracted to guys who wore their clothes that way. I still find some guys to this day very hot when dressed this way... it IS one of the styles right now for everyday wear.  8) (However, there is a difference between buying clothes that are made that way and just pulling your pants down..) Here is what it SHOULD look like below and NOT pulling your pants down.  :thumbup;

Although 70's fashions leave a lot to be desired at least it showed some sense of adventure and flamboyancy. Unlike to-day where the objective of mens fashion seems to be to appear as drab and scruffy and dirty looking as possible. Just about everyone under 40 wears jeans for any occasion (I don't think anyone under forty owns a pair of tailored trousers.)

Then there's the inevitable 'Stressed T-Shirt' which looks like it's on inside out and the more unironed dirty and creased up it looks the better. As a young man I wouldn't have been seen dead with the arse of my pants down to my knees and those who wear them like that remind me of chastened dogs with their tails between their legs.

Fashion is expressed as a starment and until recently has always been about presenting yourself in a confident positive manner. What to-days fashion says to me is a male generation with low self esteem lack of imagination, and no pride in being a man. The fashion in teenage girls clothes on the other hand is probably more creative and imaginative but overshadowed by the obsession with sexual attraction rather than any aesthetic attributes. Generally speaking the trend seems be to look as much like an expensively dressed hooker as you can. So yes maybe 70's fashions were in many respects in poor taste but in the light of today's fashions were they honestly that bad?

I personally like a man in jeans. Unless he is going to an event or job that requires other attire.

I don't think men nor females who do it look good at all when pulling their pants down, however, there are jeans out there that are made to look this way even though they are not pulled down. This is one of the style out right now.

I wouldn't let my daughter dress at all the way I see alot of teenagers and young adults dressing now a days, however... there is tasteful clothing that is "sexy" that is perfectly fine and again, I wouldn't let my daughter wear it, but when she is an adult, I don't see the problem.

I like a man in jeans too, but they need to capture his butt in a nice fit- I do not care if those hangy down pants are in 'style' they are yucky.

I love a man in jeans, but not the baggy kind that some boys/men are wearing.  They just look so messy to me, no matter if they are made to look like that or people wear them down past their ass.   :thumbdown;

I was at the mall last weekend with some friends, my son and their kids.  The boys saw those jeans and wanted to wear them because they look "gangsta"  are you kidding me????  I do not like the message that it promotes.  I told my 8 year old that no way will he ever wear those while he is under 18.  I'm cool with fashion, but nothing like that.  This also goes for the girls and some women who wear their thongs showing through their jeans on purpose.  I don't want to see that!  I especially don't want my son to see that.

A wedggie comes to mind when underwesr or thongs are showing. How odd that a plumbers ass crack is now in fashion. :rofl;

Hmmm, you think that's gangsta, let me show you what gangsta really is. Let me take you to the city and stick you in the projects comes to mind. Your scarred little butt will think twice after a night there in gang land.
