In some ways the anonymity is good, you can have courage to talk to people that you would never speak to in person. If I was in a room with all of you, I might be afraid to approach you. But I think it lets some people project an image that they are more knowlegeable and superior to others. I have gained so much knowledge from people here. It is nice people can express opinions.

I often read a local newspaper's message board. I can not believe how people judge. Often they don't have facts. They judge parents so harshly. A recent example was a 4 th grader who accidently shot himself. They ripped the family to shreds. I live down the road from them. They had everything wrong. You know the type (the posters), it wouldn't happen to me, I'd never do this or do that. Like they have never made mistakes or have things happen.

I find that most of the time when people dislike something in you, its because it reminds them of themselves. When they put you down, they don't have to look at their own faults.

  Are you talking about me?? LOL I spend a lot of time online - it really increased during the time I was trying to learn about being a kidney donor, then it evolved into looking for a donor. Now it's an addiction, I guess, but one that won't kill me or get me arrested! The anonymity is helpful, I am intimidated around new people so probably would be inclined to not engage in much conversation. Online you can't shut me up!

My whole family is busy with jobs and school so I think we have real lives.  That said we are all internet addicts...frequently all of us are online from different parts of the house or our various mobile devices.  We aren't freaks...we're just into what is cool.  We have instant access to people and information of all kinds in a way that never existed until a few short years ago.  I've been addicted to tech toys since I was about 6 years old.  I doubt things are going to change much.  Why do we do it?  Cuz its fun!

I love having access to the whole world.  I was raised to be a part of a global community and the internet makes the world smaller.  I can keep up with friends around the world. Two hundred years ago, when someone moved across the country or the ocean, that was pretty much the end of ties.  Now, everyone is a click away.  I learn something new everyday.  Also, my grown kids say I text like a 16 yr old girl!  My cell phone was suppose to be for the all important "call", but instead I text my sister in Ohio, my friend in Texas, or my kids.  I love this technology---but I love life--even though I would like to change part of it--it still is great to be apart of this lovely earth.

I am still very uninformed when it comes to the computer.

I found site site when I was going to go on dialysis.
And I am pretty much here what I am off here.
I enjoy the people I have met here.
They have become friends.
And I am fortunate to have many good off-line friends.
But when I feel ready to leave this earth, it won't have anything to do with anyone else or
about anything else. It would be because life is too hard and suffering is too much.
Then I would quit dialysis.

Yes, having access to people and info. are so crucial for kidney patients because we have a lot of needs.  Having say that, I know and understand members here more than people outside my house.  Maybe I should get out more and expand my networks beside here.

livecam, I am also a technology enthusiast! I love anything that has to do with technology... especially space. I remember getting dial-up (the only kind of connection back then!) internet when the internet first came out, I was doing home schooling that year because my Lupus was running ramped... I spent most all day online chatting with so many people, I made so many friends, and actually did the "meet and greet" with some friends I met (with my parent of course, not alone). I was 15/16 years old.. wow, so I been using the internet almost (when possible) on a daily basis for 13 years now. I feel old.

I love 'playing' on the Internet.  I first started on on-line BBSes back in 89, when some of the colleges were running a version of a BBS called "badboy".  It has places to post and an on-line chat area too. 

For you Trivia Buffs, the term "internet" was first adapted as an official term back in December of 1974.  Dang, wish I had known of it back then!

I use the internet mainly to acces this site. The only other time I use it is when I need to reference something or other. I don't surf bacause I've got more interesting things to do and they don't involve a PC. I don't feel any urge to make contact with anyone from the general public with whom I probably have nothing in common. I would much rather spend the limited social time that I have with either my friends on IHD with whom I have a very important thing in common or  in face to face contact with my friends and family.

George, you know you won't be judged--some may disagree, but in the end we are all entitled to our own opinions. As long as someone doesn't keep telling me I am brain dead or ignorant for my opinion, I respect their's.  Who can really say who is right or who is wrong in our opinions?  We are all a product of our environment and upbringing, and what we are exposed to.  I'll still love ya George--so post away. Looking forward to what you have to say

I'm hesitant to reply because I don't understand the post.  It seems that because of LL's post, most of the responses are members defending the reasons they use the internet.  For me no explanation is necessary.  If you don't like the fat headed, brain dead posts, move on.  Read something that enlightens you.  That's the beauty of the net, take what you need and leave the negative behind.

Another way to look at it is that some people like me for instance have families and other interests but like to be on the internet.  I like to read the news, to surf, to read other opinions, read blogs, get medical information, play games.
The internet opens up a whole other world for me where I can play Scrabble with someone at 3AM.  I don't thnk I'm a freak for doing this. I have a real life and I choose to spend some time on the internet when I'm not busy.  When I developed ESRD I truthfully lost a lot of friends who couldn't handle my illness.  Oh well.  Life goes on.

well, like most people, i sometimes just get overloaded with the fluff and crap that some people put out there. sometimes it just seems like no matter what i say or do, there's always somebody that has something negative to say about it. luckily, it doesn't last long....i like to share who i am with others, but there are just so many that will jump on you with both feet, so quickly, that it makes me think it would be better to just keep to myself.

You know LL we should be grateful for these people just as we are grateful for our enemies, they provide us the opportunity to improve ourselves.  We as humans all have one thing in common, the pursuit of happiness.  My enemies provide me the opportunity to challenge myself to be a more compassionate person.  I think I understand your frustration, it is much more difficult to do what is good and right.

Not that I have reached enlightenment (far from it) but I do feel as if I am on the right path, I only wish others would see for themselves what I see from time to time, not for me but for them.  When I hear about how material possesions bring so called happiness into my friends lives I cringe.  When I see how others attachments affect them I hope one day they will be able to let go and live on their own.
