Memory ?

Does anyone find their memory is being affected by renal failure ? In fact is this possible? Or am i going senile ?  . I find a lot of the time i am being reminded of stuff that has happened ,or i said, or things i should remember , but im constantly forgetting or cant remember .. nothing major just bits and bats .. is this something else we can add to the list ?

i've always had problems remembering things, even in my 20's. i would walk into a room and wonder why i had gone in there. as i reached 50 my kids would laugh and as "aaaah a senior moment" recently it has been more of a problem. the other day i was at the computer reading e-mail and i planned to google something when i finished. when i finished i knew there was something i wanted to look up, but for the life of me i couldn't remember what. it didn't click until about an hour later when a tv commercial reminded me. i'm not really sure it has anything to do with dialysis, i've always been terrible with names as an example. and i could always blame it on hitting my head in the auto accident last week. been real fuzzy ever since. who knows.

This is a question I struggle with every day.  My mother died from Alzheimer's 4 years ago. Watching her go from an articulate, talented, powerful woman to a shell of her former self was devastating.  It is a long, slow journey with no hope and I would pray every night for God to release her from this hell on earth.  I do feel that renal failure causes memory problems.  But, I constantly worry that I won't know the difference between normal memory "hiccups" and Alzheimer's.  I hate when my family will say "remember, I told you that yesterday"--- if I remembered I wouldn't be asking you now!!!!    So, please, please tell me that the kidney failure, anemia, etc, are the main reason I don't always remember.  Of course, it could just be an age thing.   It will be interesting to hear everyone's opinion on this subject.

Hmmm...I thought it was due to my diabetes! I keep post-it notes and a pen EVERYWHERE, even in the bathroom! There are little hot pink and green stickies on furniture all over the house. Drives my husband crazy!

I once watched something on tv about a guy in pakistan that had a transplant and they mentioned that after it his memory got better , clearer . so this is why i asked ..another chemical inbalance

I think it does have to do with renal failure, because as my kidney got worse so did my memory and the time it would take my mind to process things. Since the transplant I've gotten better, not quite where I was before all this, but better.

Yes, I do think kidney failure can affect the memory.  I am 35, and as my kidney gets worse, so does my memory.  I have always had a very good memory until here recently.  Now my memory stinks!!!

Yes, kidney failure can affect to memory. Memory issue is one of the possible symptoms for uremic encephalopathy, which refers to the central nervous system signs and symptoms that result from a decline in kidney function.

Based on what I have read the threshold for these symptoms is a fall of GFR below 10%.

Confusion and memory problems are related to the toxins not being removed from your body. That is what my nephrologist once told me.

After my transplant I was told by other transplantees that "Prograf Moments" are common. I thought it was just me getting older and confused more. My attention span is not what it used to be.

My function droped about 5% in the last year and my memory has taken a beating. Sometimes, it is quite scary. It is like my brain blanks out and I don't know, remember or recognize anything. Luckily, it does not last long but it is really disorienting. And of course there's the less benign spending two days looking for my sunglasses  that's always fun!

Wow i thought again i was the only one. I used to have a very good short term memory. Around a year ago i told my Dr. who sent me to a neurologist. I am 52. She sent me to the hospital for tests. She said some of my problem comes with age. The nerve! I'm still a young man. At least inside i still feel like I'm in my 20S. Remember those days Sluff ole buddy! Anyway the other problem was dialysis. The Neph. of course said no way. But i tend to believe the Neurologist. I write everything down. I live by myself so i also have two calanders that help. If i always have a shirt pocket i would keep a small one with me always.

I must tell you i blame IHD for my memory loss, when i get online i forget i have chores, a hubby, pets, plants and anything else that is supposed to be fed, cleaned, bathed, groomed etc...  (at least that's my story and i am stickin' to it dammit)

When I go into my unit for dialysis, I take my weight on the scales by the door.  By the time I get to my chair and the nurse asks me my weight I have forgotten what it was.  This is in the space of about a minute.  I have had to go back twice to get my wieght on occasion!

Now then, what was I talking about?

yes,  memory  loss  is  associated  with  ckd,my  problem  is  i  forget  individual  parts  of  conversations  i  might  have,  but  can  recall  in  detail  things  that  happen  in  years  gone by

I thought I was going crazy because as my kidney disease got worse,  I was forgetting so much. Good thing my kids were good sports and reminded me constantly of their activities.  Then I read a brochure about kidney disease and it's symptoms, and lo and behold memory loss was listed! At least I knew I wasn't going crazy! My biggest problem was forgetting certain words while having conversations. Things have improved with the transplant, but I think I do have "prograf" moments now!

Nope, no problems with memory before, during, or after but old age is approaching..
