Hello,

My handle is Big Dadii. I live in Virginia and I am 47 years old. I have a family of a wife and one daughter. Then there is my daughter's best friend who I think of as my second daughter. My wife is lovely and we've been married for 23 loving years.I like fishing and photography. I have been on dialysis for eight months.Here in Va. I go to Davita for my treatments.  At first I was using a cathiter to dialyze. I just recently got a fistula and now I'm using both at this time. I use to have fun during my treatments until they started sticking that 15 gauge needle in my arm.  :'(  It's been sooo painful, but thats another post. Well thats all about me. I hope to be able to learn how to cope with dialysis with your help.

Thank you

Welcome Big Daddi.

I used to live in Virginia Beach on the border of Chesapeake. Loved it. Where in Va do you live?

Hello Big Dadii,

Welcome to your new IHD family. We are glad to have you and invite you to browse, ask questions and post all you want.

I think there is a creme that you can ask for to apply before your needle sticks to alleviate some pain. Someone here can answer that better since I am predialysis.

I hope it gets easier for you.  :grouphug;

It's great that you joined the group.  Have you ever asked the clininc about the buttonhole  technique?  It makes things a lot easier.   :canadaflag;

Hi Bigdadii,

Welcome to this great board.

Definitely get the numbing creme, it is a prescription you need to ask your Dr. for it.
I believe it's called "Emla creme".  The pain of the needle sticks will ease eventually.

Best wishes,
Chris

Welcome BigDadii. I have a working fistula in my left arm. I use the "Emula" cream. You need a script from the doc. Just apply a good amount of it before dialysis once you apply it wrap the area with "Saran" wrap. I would recommend doing it a good hour and a half before you go. Once you get there just wash it off and it should help. Just like with anything with the body we tend to get used to it.

i am a 51 year old male on dialysis for 3 years now. This is my second time. My brother donated a kidney to me about 13 years ago. I found this site on another site. I had to laugh when i saw what it was called. I hope to meet people from all over to talk about dialysis.

Welcome to our community, Big Dadii!  We are so glad you decided to join us.  There is so much here to be of help to you.  We even have an Off-topic section when you want to think about things other than dialysis.
I have been on dialysis for about 2 years.  The needles have gotten a bit easier, but there is still some pain.  I just grit my teeth, knowing it will be over in a minute.
There is so much here for you to read.  But we also need to hear from you and know how you are doing.  This website has become a real family and that is not just hype.  So take advantage of all we have to offer.

And I totally agree with Razman about the buttonholes. A little Emla cream can't hurt either.

:thx; to everybody who replied to my post. I have enjoyed myself here so far and plan on staying here. I live in Portsmouth, Va. and I'm using lidocain cream which has reduced the pain. My infiltration and bruises are still apparent but the soreness is gone. Thanx for all the advice and I'll be back. :cuddle;

Welcome from another big Daddy! Your story scares me a bit since
I am pre dialysis, and my neph keeps tell me I have "thick skin".
I think I will have to cream up and use lidocaine. Big Steve

 :usaflag; :thx;

Thank you for all your wellcomes. I know its been a long time but I type while I'm at work and they had frozen my access to certain web sites on my computer.I'm also sure they will freeze it again when it gets busy here after Thanksgiving. I've been doing good with the needles now that I've learned how to use the Lidocain.Although sometimes I think they stick me just in the place I missed.

Since the last time I was here I have had two surgeries on my fistula. The first was to widen the venus side. The second was becausw it just stopped working. I had just gone to a session on a Friday and by Saturday I couldn't feel the throb anymore. That Sat I had to go to the E room for emergency dialysis. It took all day. Although I like hospital dialysis better. ( :2thumbsup; nice bed and bigger TV) Now after the second surgery the physician(and  I say that loosely)couldn't feel it working so he put a cathiter back in. The thing is right after I went to my next session I noticed that the fistula was working. Unfortunately so did the Techs and my Neph. Now we're back using those needles. They use 14's for better flow. >:( But I'm getting use to it again and can't wait till they pull this cat again. I never got to get in a pool after they pullit the last time. Well thats all for today. Thanks again
