Do you like Harry Potter books or movies?
I don't care for them and find it amazing on tv when it shows
all the people excited about it.

I love the books, have read each one of them so far, except number seven. That being said, I felt no need to be at the store at 12:01 this morning to get a copy. What I did instead, was yesterday I bought copies of numbers 1, 2, and 3 for my son, since he's just now old enough to start reading them, and sat down and started re-reading number 5 myself. I figure by the time I re-read 5 and 6, the hype will have died down enough that I'll be able to go into any book store and find a copy of number 7 when I'm ready. The trick will be avoiding exposure to the secrets before I get to read it myself.

Yeah, I don't get it.  I was only able to get through a couple chapters of the first book and I saw the first movie, which made up my mind that it wasn't for me.  Kids I know love Harry Potter though.

I love the books - but not enough to stand in line at midnight to get one!  Got mine this morning - and there weren't any lines and they had plenty of books still to sell.

it's another example of how people are so hungry for something that takes them out of the uncomfortable realities of daily life. in books and movies there are usually clear boundaries between 'good' and 'evil.' unlike real life, where someone can appear loving but really has a hidden agenda, or someone can appear negative and unhappy, until we get to know them and learn their 'story.'
the potter books show how much people want and need to find magic in their lives, but can't, so a book allows them to experience it for a while, at least.
it's kind of sad, in a way, because real life can be magical and exciting. it's just too much work for most, to make it so.

...I just love the story...it does take me away to a place I wish I could really experience,at the end of the day I know its just a story-but dreaming is so much fun! I do not read books because my life sucks... I love how these particular books feed my imagination, they make me feel like a kid again. I just love a good story. and its nice to have a set of books in common with my children.

My younger daughter asked me to pre-order the book, which I did. It was supposed to arrive here on Sat. according to the tracking, but never did. So she asked me to take her to Barnes and Noble and buy another copy, and when the shipped one arrives her dad said he would return it. I said no. I mean, she could wait another day, although she is feeling very deprived because all her friends have it. I guess I am just a bad mom. Hehehehe. Get over it!

ours did arrive saturday, but then it apparently shipped 2 weeks ago. (got it through walmart.com and we were told credit card would charge when book shipped. my daughter has already finished it, i got my hands on it this morning. she read all night. 7 of us were at the midnight showing of the new movie. not everyone likes science fiction or fantasy, but me i love it. we were at a small bookstore called simon says read, friday nite. they were selling harry potter wands (had a couple of young men making them on a lathe) the money was donated to relay for life, which was going on in the park down the street and the reason we were there in the first place. it's all in fun.

Rob showing off his pot of gold!

« Reply #19 on: July 24, 2007, 11:52:08 AM »

I'm not a fan and don't get the hype that goes with it.  Some of those people they showed on tv standing in line look quite strange to me!

However, it gets people, especially children, reading and that is a wonderful thing.  I am quite impressed by J.K. Rowling, she has a wonderful rags to riches story.  Way to go!

Oh THANKS!!! You always take her side!

Actually Amazon said they shipped 7/19 to arrive 7/21, but when UPS delivered it to the hub 5 miles from our house, they took all the Harry Potter books to the post office to complete their delivery, with no tracking numbers...WTF??? So I took her to buy another copy, and of course, the shipped copy arrived later that day. Now we sent it back. I still say PATIENCE would have made this easier (and cheaper too!)

It's true that the kids are all crazy for Harry Potter.  We were in Vancouver the other day and bought our copy at the airport there.

It was funny but one seller had it for $47 and on the other side of the gate another had it for $30.  I put the $47 copy down, got the good deal, and was my daughter's best friend (for a while) that day.

She had the book more than half read by the time we landed in Los Angeles and finished it before bed that night.

I'm thinking the author must be kinda loony to stop now...maybe she has enough money to last forever already but eventually being richer than Bill Gates isn't a bad thought either.

I am so impressed by the author's ability to create an alternate universe with so much texture and depth. I have only seen the movies, but Rolando's eldest was in line at midnight when it hit the bookstores and finished it yesterday. She's a college student now but has been hooked since the beginning.

I would like very much to believe in magic, but not evil. Hmmm, funny how things work out.

Rowling currently has more money than the queen of England.  Not bad for a former waitress who scribbled story lines on napkins!
