Miss you so much Susie. Will always <3 you!

« on: July 17, 2007, 06:16:54 PM »

For the past several months I have been studying to take the GED test.  I'm not sure what GED stands for but it is basically an equivalent of a High School Diploma.  Anyways, I started taking the pretests on June 19th and I will finish the last 2 pretests July 31st.
There is Math (2 parts), Science, Social Studies, Language Arts Reading, Language Arts Writing with Essay.  So far I have done the Science, Social Studies and Lang. Arts Reading.  I will have to finish the rest of the pretest on the 31st.
To pass the pretests they take all your scores and average 'em out, your average has to be 450 or higher to pass.  With the 3 pretests I have taken my average score so far is 608.  ;) The only thing I'm scared of is writing the essay.  If I wasn't so scared or had more self confidence I would of taken that part today. (sigh)  :-[
If I pass the rest of the tests on the 31st, then in August I can take the GED Test.  So that will be exciting to get that over with.  Also I was told if I get a high enough score I would be eligable for a grant to go to Barton County Community College.  :yahoo;
Well thats what I've been working on lately.  I'll keep ya posted as I progress.
Hope I didn't bore anyone with all that....I've just been really excited and wanted to share.  :bandance;

Later,
Robert

Roberto --
Way to go! I am so proud of you! That's a lot of work and I know you will do well on the essay. I think studying proofreading skills helps with part of it.
GED means General Educational Development. The GED exams measure your knowledge and skills in certain academic fields that are generally learned in high school.
Keep at it - I hope that grant comes through!

I took the GED some years ago and I know that with a pre score of 608 you should have no problem.  Good Luck.

Go, Tubes, Go!  You can do the essay part - you just need to take a deep breath, organize your thoughts, and write 'em down.  You'll do great!

Remember....

A good introductory paragraph with a good thesis statement.  Tell what you will talk about. Turn the question into part of your answer.
Then knock 'em dead with three well developed paragraphs about the topic.
Then kill it with a good conclusion that says what you just wrote about.

Essay writing is easy. (Says the teacher.)

I am so proud of you!  What an accomplishment!  My brother got his GED in his early 30"s and now he is an engineer with a large corporation who sends him around the world because of his ability to invent.  It would be so easy NOT to do this - you aren't taking the easy way out -- Good for you!

Hubby did his GED a few years ago (about 10).  Guess who his teacher was . Me!!!  I taught the GED program nighttime for a couple of years.  Told people only time he ever got to sleep with his teacher lol. Works a little different here with the testing (or did then anyway). No pretests.  I was basically a facilitator.  I had nothing to do with the testing that was done by another person.  He passed anyway.  Found the essay and the language part the hardest.

Earlinda, they do have practice essays in the GED prep book.  I just haven't gotten around to 'em. I know, shame on me, I'll get around to it soon.  ;)

Good for you Tubes. Hope all goes well. Remember though No one likes a smart asz. :lol;

Thanks Kit, I'll remember that, but I'm still sure I will bomb the essay.  I just hope I won't have to write 5 paragraphs.  Introductory, Body and Conclusion.....3 is all I think I can handle.  I'll make all of the teachers on here PROUD!

Yes, my answering machine, whick says, "leave me something".  So Susie started leaving me her socks, now I'm just waiting for the outfit to match. :rofl;

Again, Thank you everyone, it means alot to me knowing ur all behind me.  I can sure use the support, my confidence is a bit lacking.

For the past several months I have been studying to take the GED test.  Well thats what I've been working on lately.  I'll keep ya posted as I progress.
Hope I didn't bore anyone with all that....I've just been really excited and wanted to share.  :bandance;

Later,
Robert

Good luck!  I am going to tell you all something I never tell anyone, not many people know this.  I quit HS in tenth grade.
I had a lot of problems in school, I failed a math course and a gym class so the school was going to leave me behind a grade.  I would have had to take 2 of each class if they promoted me and that wasn't possible.  Nobody at the school even tried to take my side or help me, I was an A-B student in everything else. I had taken  biology, literature, world history and some other BS classes like shop and cooking. I did Shakespeare plays and dissected a feral pig in biology, I knew history inside and out. BUT I refused to be left behind! I fought with the guidance counselor-he was basically useless.  :urcrazy;  Some of the jocks I knew who excelled on the sports field had horrible grades yet they passed.  It was so unfair but since then I learned that life isn't fair
and you just have to play the game the best you can.  So I went to work at different jobs. Nobody ever knew how little schooling I had, I always put down I graduated and I guess they didn't bother to check.  I know grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc so I did good on my jobs.  Sometimes I think about what may have happened if I did stay in school, if we only know then what we know now, right?  I had one sympathetic teacher who taught GED classes and she set me up with them at night school.  I just couldn't pass the math part.
So here I am at 45 with no HS diploma.  Maybe I'll try the tests again when it's time.
Robert, you've inspired me to try again!

Here to cheer u on and you will pass the GED test.

The secret to do well on Math portion is practice and break down the problem 1 step at a time.

Good luck.
