USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center ..

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds  on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total   reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up."  "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

Maybe it's just me or the picture, but it seems kinda small for a warship.

Sluff,

That is awesome!!   Maybe it is because my birthday is on 9/11 but the hair stood up on my neck just gazing at this beauty of a warship.  Thanks for posting this because I for one will never ever forget.   :usaflag;

It is VERY impressive and the fact that materials from the World trade center were used makes it even better.  Where are all the guns and missiles and "war type" accessories  ???

Not a fighting ship, but a delivery assault ship.

We just had an American warship come into Port Adelaide, but I didn't go down to visit it (the Kittyhawk??). Of course, you were only allowed to look at it from a certain distance anyway.

I guess it doesn't take a particularly long time to get to Port Adelaide from my suburb, but it's not exactly close either. Anyway, I think she left just yesterday.

EDIT - it wasn't in Port Adelaide at all, apparently. I must have mis-heard the news reports, it was in Sydney, and is due to stop in at Brisbane.

THE 7000 sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk have farewelled Sydney – and about $10 million of their money during their five day stay.

Escorted by a flotilla of small boats, the Kitty Hawk left Sydney Harbour after five days docked at the Garden Island Naval Base.

It is estimated the 7000 sailors and four support ships spent $2 million a day during their visit to Sydney – or around $280 a crew member, a day.

The sailors also engaged in various charitable works around the city, including a visit to sick children at the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

This was probably the Kitty Hawk's last visit to Australia, with the aircraft carrier scheduled to be decommissioned in June 2008.

It will be replaced by the nuclear-powered George Washington.

The 323m long super-carrier and the four US navy support ships that accompanied it to Sydney had been taking part in the joint Australian-US military exercise Talisman Sabre off Queensland.
The Kitty Hawk is due to berth at Brisbane before leaving Australian waters.

“We'll be heading out to do some more operations and have fun right up here off the Australian coast,” Lieutenant Commander Tom Ray told Sky News.

“We do have another port call coming up in Australia, we'll have one in Brisbane.”

I guess I am the only one who thinks there is something disturbing about this ship.  Something about turning all of that death and destruction from 9/11 into something else that will only bring more death and destruction to the world.

I support the people who make up the U.S. military but that doesn't necessarily mean I am gung ho about any fight.  I am not proud in the sense I want to show my muscle.  I see and hear of so many people exclaiming their pride for America and then they will say some dumb crap like, "I wish they would just build a wall to keep everyone out", or "just nuke the bastards", or "hell yea, kick their ass".  I am sure you get my point.

I am proud of what America was meant to stand for, I support the people of the military (the people that take the orders), I like baseball, hamburgers and hotdogs, coke a cola, apple pie, I believe the children are our future and I believe glitters last post was a bit rooty tooty!

If you don't like me..........bite me, but do not start  s h i t  with me about patriotism and being American (especially when you don't even know me) because I am not proud to kill.

I can respect your position George, I really do but I disagree with you to a point.

2 simple questions.

1. If some country or organization drops a bomb on your city street or 20 to 30 insurgents are going door to door looking to pillage your wife or daughter kill them and force you to take arms to be on their side, what exactly would you do?

2.If you were able bodied, your Country calls you to serve and you are sent overseas to fight in a Country with fellow Americans, would you deny your Country because you don't want to kill?

No matter how you answer these questions, I will respect your view even if I disagree. If you don't want to answer at all I will understand.

my father served in WWII. when i was a small child, we would go to parads and when the flag passed, stand. i would look up at my father and find tears in his eyes. now having lived though viet nam and everything that has come since, i know why my father cried.  there are moments i'm grateful my youngest is developmentally disabled. i may be patriotic, but i'm glad i don't have to send my son to war. this would be a very, very different world if it weren't for men like my father. however i bet he and others like him would be the first to tell you they are and were not "proud to kill"

George wrote in the Gun Debate thread....

Quote
For the record, I am one American who would like to get out (if and when the opportunity presents itself I will be on my way).  There are a number of places I wouldn't mind spending the rest of my days, heck just to the North is Canada, I would rather be living there in Vancouver or something.

For the Record you said you wanted to leave- so don't try to be all 'I love my country and apple pie'--you already stated you would like to 'get out'

You don't want to enjoy killing the terrorists? You want to have tea?  you can't reason with them- its them or us, they will try to kill us until we die- they will never stop- we can't give them enough free shit to 'win them over' with diplomacy.....they hate our way of life-they want us to be dead. They are called extremists for a reason.

Killing is a nasty business- and some people do not have the stomach for doing what needs to be done.

Not biting you today George- you probably taste like Eggs Benedict.  :sarcasm;
