Rob showing off his pot of gold!

« on: June 07, 2007, 12:13:52 PM »

If you are working, what is your profession?  If you aren't working due to retirement/disability, what was your profession?

I work in Human Resources for a global company.  I don't do the normal human resources that people think of, I do a ton of reports that go to management.  I also help our HR Reps set up their forecasting of employees.  However, my job is being eliminated come 8/31 due to a major reorganization, so I am looking for another one in the same company.  This new job I am applying for is my ideal job.  Still in Human Resources, but would be interacting with our new joiners, setting up internal resumes, setting up plans for them.  It would be a lot of fun.  Oh, I also work from home  :2thumbsup;.  95% of the time I wear regular clothing, however now and then it's nice to work in my pj's and slippers  :clap;

Rob is a Journeyman Electrician.  He's been doing this ever since he was in high school.  He has the ideal job now, he's an electrician for a major city in Massachusetts.  He loves it!

Joe is currently on disability but was/is a field tech for a big company that repairs/supplies ATM's, security equipment, etc.

My main job is an office manager/secretary for a construction company.  My part time job (used to be fulltime before I changed jobs) is a receptionist/technician for a vet office.   :)

Since Jenna was born I have done volunteer fundraising and public relations in the areas of children and music programs.
No pay, but lots of experience!
My husband is an economist, but has been disabled for a few years, finally had to stop working in 2001.

Because of my long medical history and complications I've found it difficult to stay in a job. I work in IT at the moment, but I'm off on short term disability.

I currently am not working, I am on SSDI. I will go back to work when i get a vehicle, as I live 30 miles from town. I am going to school online for a degree in Medical Billing and Coding and hope to do that when i graduate next year.

I worked at Citibank, in the statement processing building doing Data Entry, then got promoted to Invoice Processor. I worked there for 4 years before going on disability from being on dialysis. Bleh.

I am so bored from not working since January 24th 2001... AHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I miss work!

I am on disability right now, but I was an Employee Benefits Administrator.  I administered 401K and ESOP plans for mid-size companies.  I really miss it too.  Hopefully, I'll be able to work again after the transplant.

Ain't it horrible when you have to take disability.......I know what that is like since my husband had been on it since 2002 and he goes through a lot of depression and self esteem issues with that.....

I feel for those who have to settle for a life of "disability".....I know I would go nuts if I couldn't work.....how do you guys manage it?

Having to settle for disability is very hard.  Yes, some of us just try to do our best with our current situations.

I'm in sales for a commercial printing and mailing company. Been in the printing biz since 1983 - done a little bit of everything (customer service, production, management, sales) Sales is the best...get to schmooze with my clients, come and go as I please. I work on straight commission though, so I work my a_ _ off, but at least my pay is directly related to how hard I work.

I love the printing biz!!  I've worked in a print shop at one time or another from high school to my third year after beginning hemodialysis.  I've done press work--letterpress and lithography, as well as paste up of local newspapers. --Yes in the old days (1985) we were still using hot wax and single-edge blades to put together the newspapers before they would go down to be photographed!

Just before starting dialysis (and right out of college) I worked at ABC News on the program Nightline as a clerk in the business office.  When my boss learned that I would be starting hemodialysis sometime in the near future he freaked out and asked me to find my replacement.

I left ABC and then started my own television documentary production company.  Other than trying to pay my bills by also working at the print shop in those early days, I've been producing documentaries for national networks ever since.  The last 15 years exclusively for national PBS in prime time.

I still design all the promotion materials, press kits and advertising for my programs.  I guess a little of that printer's ink is still in my veins.

Oh yeah! I used to call myself the paste up queen! I had the waxer, had to layout galley type w/an exacto, hand-rule lines, even correct typos by cutting and pasting in publications! I ran the stat camera for a couple of years - made paper plates for the press and "high res" (haha) black and white images for cutting and pasting. It sure has come a long way - everything is digital now and changes can be made on the fly. Of course, that means that clients just want things turned around that much quicker! I still love the business though - especially when I get to work closely with clients on really nice projects.

Life's a bitch and then you go on dialysis!

« Reply #23 on: June 12, 2007, 05:53:57 AM »

Since I was made redundant from the print industry 4 years ago, I have worked for one of the three British national examination boards specialing in GCSE, A Levels and GNVQ. In Britain the standard awarding system in any given subject is GCSE level (General Certificate of Secondry Education)
taken at age 16. Students can then go on to study for General Certificate of Education Advanced level over the next 2 years in their chosen subjects and eventually sit the exams at 18 years old. Entry to University is dependent on the number of A levels gained and at what grades, the better the grades the more the chance of going to a top UNI.

Part of my job is to allocate specific examiners for the subjects I am responsible for to specific schools and education centres thoughout Britain and ensure that the exam work from the correct schools gets to the correct allocated examiner. That's where the fun starts, for various reasons too numerous to mention exam material starts going astray mainly through the negligence of the schools themselves and we spend the rest of the summer trying to track the work and then redirect it to the right examiner.

Overall I am very happy with this job because compared to my old job in the print industry it is far less stressfull. I couldn't have coped with dialysis under the kind of stress levels I had to endure then and I do I hope it lasts me until retirement in six years time. I work a full time 35 hour week starting any time between 8am and 10 am to between 4 and 6 pm  with 32 days paid holiday per year. The flex time arangements are great for me because it means I don't have to go to bed at stupid o'clock so that the cycler will be finished in time to get to work on time. My work place is near Manchester town centre which is about 4 miles from where I live and starting this week  through the rest of the summer I have started cycling to work because after a recent visit to the renal clinic they told me I am clinically obese.
