have insomnia, and it's 5:30 in the morning here in Virginia,lol .Does anyone else have insomnia much ? I hate sleeping aid's but do break down   occasionally and take one. My dog,Tito, think's he has to stay up as long as I do and is sitting here looking at me pitifully.Do dog's get insomnia, or is he just very faithful? lol!

oh i have the exact same problem. Especially after dialysis... i usually don't fall asleep to 3  - 4 am in the morning then have to wake up for dialysis in the morning.. its very annoying. Like you my dog stays up with me and loves it.... but then he is able to sleep in all day when i have to get up! ah a dogs life!   ;D

If i am having a really bad night i will take Phernergan.. (spelling) It is the best thing EVA to help you sleep.... i LOVE it!!   :thumbup;

I wish my dog would stay up with me, he's asleep in a second! He doesn't stop sleeping for nobody.But he's the best dialysis buddy you can hope for. Love him for that!

I have insomnia period. I take tylenol pm at 6:30 pm, it takes effect around 11 pm. Serious!  It is so frustrating, I am so tired and wanna sleep, and can't. I've tried a couiple of sleeping aids, doesn't work very well.   Any more, if I am asleep by 10pm, I consider myself lucky. Usually it's after 12 midnight.

I have no problem falling asleep, its just that I only sleep about 4 hours and wake up so darn early.

We probably all have it.  Insomnia is probably the most common problem kidney patients all seem to have.  I'm not sure what causes it but it is probably a combination of things. 

Sleep meds never helped me much.  We tried a few and none worked any better than another.  They wouldn't get me to sleep but would have me feeling like a zombie all day, what a combination.

The old advice about trying to go to sleep at the same time each night and not eating or consuming any caffeine for a number of hours before bedtime is probably pretty good here.  Having a nice dog like Tito can't hurt either.

The Ambien CR worked well for me.  Since returning to work (part time) I have not had the trouble I was having prior to.  Weather there is a connection or not, I don't know.  Some nights I have a little trouble falling asleep but not too often.  If I am posting (at IHD) at 3 am then you know I am having one of those nights.

I have been taking regular Ambien for 3 years, maybe I should see if my insurance covers the CR, cause after year 1 Ambien no longer works for me unless I double my dose or triple it... which i don't like doing so I just don't take it unless I have 2 sleepless nights in a row. Hmm.

I also have trouble sleeping, either short broken sleep or falling asleep when exhausted, my four legged friends think its great when i am up at 4am , more play time ! Tablets help break the cycle for a while , but doc's in the UK hate to give them to you!

Yes , the treatment's do make mine worse, but I have had insomnia since I was a kid.Some of my meds do make me sleepy ( neurontin) but I just went off that as it made my dizziness worse, and went on someting called Lyrica which seems to be doing ok for me.I take a pain pill ,occasionally that makes me sleepy, but most night 's I'm up .lol.

My husband's meds do get him fatigued but I thought kidney patients all have a fatigue problem....now tonight he says he has been sleeping all day out of boredom and last night we went to bed early since I was tired and I had to be up at 6 and then when I leave for work at 7, he goes back to sleep and tonight he says he is very tired even though he slept most of the day and he is trying to stay up for Jay Leno.........

Some nights I can sleep easy and some nights, I can't....it is just frustrating when I cannot sleep right away and I won't take meds for it neither.....

Not all have that problem.  My first time on dialysis in 1999, I didn't have that problem. The second time i did.... Idunno why.

Neon, i am taking that Lyrica too but THAT is what makes me dizzy, although i get a good nights sleep, i am always so woozy during the rest of the day so i try not to take it.  However, now that i have been swimming, i have been noticing that i sleep alot better, but these past couple of days, its been cold so i've been drinking coffee at night, then i am so tired but wired (make any sense)  :urcrazy;

Wouldn't it be wonderful if meds had no side effect's ? Even though the Lyrica does well for me,no dizziness, I have noticed that it make's my leg's a little numb , which the Neurontin didn't, but well, guess you can't have everything !

I wish that i could buy the sleep aids the doctor gives me. My insurance won't pay for them. The doc told me to buy Tylenol PM but all those aids don't work. The meds i take at night include a couple of blood pressure meds after a couple of hours i doze off. On a dialysis night i don't usually don't sleep till the early morn.

i am a 51 year old male on dialysis for 3 years now. This is my second time. My brother donated a kidney to me about 13 years ago. I found this site on another site. I had to laugh when i saw what it was called. I hope to meet people from all over to talk about dialysis.

I was once a sleeping disaster - could sleep on a pinhead!  Sleeping used to be my problem in that I found it difficult to correct students' work at home because of how sleepy I would be.   I would start watching the tv and it would end up watching me. 
Please note that all of this is in the PAST TENSE!
My sleep patterns have been totalled messed up because of dialysis.  I go to bed, sleep for an hour or two, get up, do something, go back to bed, sleep for another few hours, get up, and it goes on an on.  I envy my daughter - she is how I used to be.  She can sleep around the clock if she doesn't have anything to do!
Prior to dialysis, I did not know what it meant to lie awake and have time to think! (except for 24 years ago when I found I was pregnant!)
I don't want to take anything though.  I still think I do get some rest,especially at dialysis!

Since I cut out caffeine altogether it's a little bit better. At least the tylenol pm only takes 2 hours to kick in instead 3-5.  I miss my iced tea the most, really. I didnt' drink colas, but I did drink my coffee on occasion, probably will, if it's not a day before I really have to get up early.

I slept through my 2 final drains last night, which NEVER happens.  It must have been at least 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep.  It was awesome!   :bandance;

I hope it happens tonight.

My father was in the exact situation as you, he would take triple the dosage of sleeping tablets and still could not sleep....... the kidney specialist then recommended phernergan because it is kidney friendly, he now sleeps like a baby!!   :)
