Post moved from other thread to get more reaction. Mod Cas

My daughter is trying to use the fistula in her arm for dialysis and it keeps infiltrating. The clinic says “that’s normal and like it’s no big deal” my daughter says it’s very painful. After 3 infiltrates she stopped going for 4 months and got very sick. She is going to go back. Is infiltration indeed common?

Hi, I’m sorry to have to tell you that infiltration in a new fistula is indeed common. Ice on the arm helps a bit.
I can only wish your daughter and you lots of luck.

Love, Cas

It's not uncommon but some techs are better than others. I would ask the charge nurse for help getting a good stick.
Going without dialysis is seriously doing damage. Ask to see a vascular doctor to see if the fistula is big enough.
She may need to get a chest catheter if the fistula isn't working well.
Best of luck! I hope all works out!
