Hey! I didn't know this thread was here.

First name: Mara (rhymes with Sara and Tara, but starts with an 'M')

Nickname (irl): None, except the various pet names Andy has for me, and you're not getting THOSE!

Location (be a bit specific): The Bowels of Hell Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Age: 42, and how the hell did THAT happen?

YOUR RENAL STATUS: Currently on nocturnal home hemo - very first treatment tonight and boy, am I nervous!

What you do for a living: Figure model

What you want to do for a living: Figure model

Relationship status: Blissfully married for 13 years to Andy

Siblings: None

Pets: None

Three bands you would consider to be your favourite: Questions about favorite bands and favorite books are impossible to answer, so I'm not going to try.

Places you have travelled overseas, if any: Only been to Canada and Mexico so far, but we are in the process of finalizing our Italian citizenship, so we hope to move to Europe in the not-quite-near future

Sport(s) you play, if any: None

Sports team(s) you support: None

What you would/did name your first born child: Mary Catherine (I was very Catholic at the time)

Worst injury you've had: Psychological. I've never had any kind of real physical injury, like broken bones.

Drink/Smoke?: Don't drink, but smoke about 6 hand-rolled cigarettes a day. I know, I know...

What time do you usually go to bed/wake up: If I have nowhere to be and no alarms to answer to, I generally fall asleep around 2 AM and wake up at 10 AM. Otherwise (especially now with nocturnal) I will go to bed around 9 PM and get up at 5 AM.

Favourite colour: Green.  No, blue. No, no, wait... purple. Or maybe...

Favourite food: Chocolate, full stop.

Favourite alcoholic drink: Don't drink, but when I did it was White Russians.

Why people like you: I really couldn't say. I'm always baffled when people like me.

What people dislike about you: I'm incredibly reclusive and reserved. Most people have a big problem with this.

Best achievement in life: I don't know yet - life's not over!

Why you belong to this forum:   Where else will I find incredibly cool people who 'get it'?

First Name:    Jan

Nickname:    JJ  (but now I've gotten used to Looney)

Location:     South Central Missouri, USA  aka B.F.E.    It's beautiful country but it's REALLY country.

Age:      Just turned 54 on Halloween but am the youngest 54 year old I know.

Renal Status:    Caregiver to hubby who is currently on home hemo with NxStage.

What do you do for a living:      Iretired from a Mid Size Insurance Carrier as Claims Manager and now I'm a cattle farmer.

What do you want to do for a living:      I am considering a second career as an ambulance driver, nurse, pharmacist or maybe just quality control for a busy nephrology practice....my qualifications are getting stronger every day.   ;D

Relationship Status:     Married to "hubby"

Siblings:    2 older sisters, 1 younger sister and a baby brother (he's 47 now)

Pets:     Australian Shepherd - Murphy    Mini Schnauzer - Duke   12 fish   50 head of cattle (and, yes, they have names too)

Three Favorite Bands:       #1 Eric Clapton (well he does have other folks playing with him so that qualifies as a band)  #2  Kenny Wayne Shepherd    #3  Brooks & Dunn, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, Buddy Guy, Allison Krause, ...ohhhhh...this is just too hard.  I love all music.

Places I have traveled overseas:  Germany, France and Mexico.  I would love to travel a good bit more...New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Greece are my most fond dreams.

Sports:  My biggest passion as far as a sport is competitive fishing.  Beyond that....is calf wrestling considered a sport?

First born child:  Christina Marie (deceased) so I have to mention my only other "born child" - Jennifer Renee

Worst Injury:  Fractured Right Ankle in 2009.

Drink/Smoke:  When I have a chance which isn't often given the current amusement park I reside in.

Favorite Color:  Deep Burgundy/Wine

Favorite Food:  Just about any type of seafood....well...I am pretty partial to pan seared scallops.

Favorite Alcoholic Beverage:   Another tough question.  I don't get much opportunity to indulge nowadays but I would have to say a Margarita on the Rocks (no salt) made with Patron.

Why do people like me?:  I really don't know that they do.  Maybe they are just pretending.   Or maybe I just perceive that they do.  Or.......

What people dislike about me:   When I need to focus, I am VERY focused.

Best achievement in life:  So far (as said by another, it ain't over yet), my proudest moment was graduating college at age 44 with a 3.98 GPA.

Why I belong to this forum:   Because I so much appreciate getting the "straight scoop" from those who live it.  And we all help each other to keep the craziness in perspective.

I have to say, I had never been through this thread before.  I have really enjoyed "meeting" a bunch of you that I thought I knew.   :secret;

I've been on dialysis for 4 months. I didn't know anything was wrong with my kidneys until I got a pain in my ribs that wouldn't go away. I've been trying to adjust to this situation since then. I am also taking chemo for multiple myloma.this has been very hard.. My husband and my daughter have been taking care of me which is hard on them. I'm getting stronger and taking care of my self. Family is still taking me back and forth to dialysis and chemo.I hope to be able to go to home dialysis soon. They are trying to make buttonholes in my arm now. I don't know how long it takes for this. My husband is very grouchy all the time I think this is to hard on him and it changed his whole life. Now I can't go anywhere anymore. I hope this will get better.if you have any suggestions let me know.

So tell me Krisna, are you a current dialysis patient, or do you have a transplant? Have you had a transplant or transplants in the past? From 1979 is such a long time to have ESRD.

I'm on dialysis!  But I have had transplants!  I have been a patient a long time!  And I was lucky enough to have Dr. Robert Hickman as my very first Nephrologist!  And I know what a Scribner Shunt is!  lol

I posted all abt me and my transplants in the introduction section and also posted a newspaper article abt my first transplant when I was eight.  But here's the short list...

Nov. 1979 Diagnosed with ESRD after going into congestive heart failure (age 7)

Jan. 1980 start hemodialysis (which only uses acid at that time) (age 8)

Feb. 27, 1980 Five antigen transplant from father (age 8)

Sept. 1988 Return to hemodialysis (age 16)

Feb. 4, 1989 Six antigen cadaveric perfect match (age 17)

Jan. 1994  Return to dialysis (age 22)

Oct. 18, 1996 Six antigen cadaveric perfect match (age 24)

Nov. 15, 1996 emergency surgery to repair aneurysm in kidney's artery which was spotted on ultra sound

Dec. 20, 1996 emergency surgery to repair another aneurysm in the kidney's artery.  Kidney is found to be infected and if removed.  The infection has spread down the artery in my right leg and the artery is tied off until it can be bypassed at a later date.

Spring 1997 arterial bypass surgery to restore arterial blood flow to my right leg. (age 25)

July 29, 1998 Six antigen cadaveric perfect match (ultra sound tech decides to check on things just in case because he remembers me from last time)  As I'm waking up I hear, "There's a problem with the kidney, we have to take you back to the OR."   I find out later that the kidney had rolled onto its artery and cut off blood supply.  It's damaged but works.  It wasted everything like fluid and vitamins.  (age 26)

Sept. 6, 2002 Return to dialysis (age 30)

Dec. 7, 2002 Call 9-1-1 with sudden onset of severe abdominal pain.  I cannot get up off the couch!  I request and get the Medics.  Turns out my sm. intestine has become tangled in scar tissue and strangled itself, then leaked out into my body.  My potassium level is sky high.  I think it was something like 12 or higher.  At first they think I missed dialysis but hubby tells them no I didn't miss it and I got my entire treatment and I don't eat too much potassium.  They determine its from the leak.  They dialyzed me and give me IV meds to fool my body into thinking it's normal!  Outlook is not good.  The surgeon sleeps in the OR waiting for my potassium to get low enough.  Surgery is performed, during which my heart stops for appr. 12 minutes!  Surgeon goes and tells my family that she doesn't think I will survive.  My heart stops beating three more times!  I am in a coma for almost a week.  My sisters and my grandmother all come home surgeons don't think I will make it!  My little sister gets mad at our dad for calling funeral homes.  She wasn't there when the doctor said I probably wasn't gonna make it!
