Hello,

Is it possible for a tea-totaller to get their liver damaged over time just because of their daily kidney-transplant-anti-rejection-medication?

And if, how come? Or, are there any different medications available in order to avoid any liver-damage?

I have no experience with this, Kristina, but in saying that, when I get my annual full set of labs done, they do a hepatic panel.  That leads me to believe that they do believe that in some patients, the anti-rejection meds can cause problems for the liver.  Have your doctors found that you are having liver problems?

Many thanks for your kind reply, MooseMom. It is not quite certain how it could happen, but I was prescribed some "heavy" Vitamin D and my next blood-test showed some damage to the liver and it was just now explained to me, that this could have been caused by the "heavy" Vitamin D and it was instantly stopped and I do my very best to coerce - in the nicest possible way - my kidney to become more enthusiastic with its function again and hopefully I can succeed... :grouphug;
... Life can be so very complicated sometimes ...  :(

Oh, that's interesting, kristina.  Why were you prescribed "heavy" vitamin D?  I know that vitamin D is used to help the "uptake" of calcium, particularly when the calcium is taken as a supplement.  If it WAS the vitamin D that caused any liver damage, do your doctors reckon that your liver will heal now that you are now longer taking it?  I hope everything will be OK.

Many thanks for your kind concern and to answer your question : I was put on "heavy" Vitamin D because suffering from Lupus necessitates to avoid the sun and this depletes - sooner or later - any natural Vitamin D-input and hopefully my liver recovers soon again from this terrible experience ...

Thank you for your educational reply.  I had no idea that lupus sufferers needed to avoid the sun, but that makes sense. 

Has damage to your liver from the "heavy" vitamin D made you feel unwell?  I am very sorry to hear about this latest health setback and hope it resolves itself very soon.  Best wishes for a very speedy recovery.
