I don't have much of a support system in that there is no one who can cover for me or take care of his personal needs at this point, but we are doing pretty well. My parents live next door so they check on him and bring him dinner after I leave for work. One of our children recently started training to do the dialysis and plans to take over one day a week so I can get more than five hours of sleep. (I can't wait! Sleep!!!!) You know how it is...some days are better than others. We just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
My husband has a CVC, so I haven't had to deal with the needles up to this point. He hasn't been a candidate for a fistula, but as his health continues to improve, that may change. I work in the ED (admin, not medical) so the idea doesn't disturb me any greater than the rest of this process. If it is something that has to be done, then that's what we will do.
