Greetings:
I am new to this site. I have been on dialysis twenty-four and a half years. I would not say I hate it but it is not my most favorite thing to do.
I look forward to getting to know many of you.

Hi Sandi, Welcome to IHD. I'm glad you have learned to live with dialysis. I would love to know more about you. Please go to your profile (click on your name) and put your gender down. Also, where are you from? We have people from all over the world on this site and it is fun to know where everyone is from. Please tell your WHOLE story, either here as a more comprehensive intro, or in General Discussion. I want to hear it!! I am 56 years young, as i have said earlier I have been on dailysis 24 and half years and i have seen many changes especially in machines. Sorry for taking so long to put up this post, but I am unfamiliar with the post program. This is being typed by my grand-niece. We will close and will try and be back soon.

Well we are finally back. I think we have figured out how the forum works.
I am up here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and today the weather is very cold. The last few days have been warmer and we are expecting it to warm up soon.
I am on dialysis because of Lupus with which I was diagnosed thirty two years ago this month. In twenty four and a half years I have seen many different dialysis machines. When I started, it the Drake. Then came along what the nurses called the Cadillac of machines, AK 10. Some time later came the Cobe which must have been the super Cadillac as everything was computerized. With the Drake and the AK 10 one still had to work out some of the arithmetic. With the Cobe everything was worked out for you. Now we have an even more computerized machine but I do not know the name of it.
When I started the filters and lines were already disposable. At that time it was a flat dializer called the Plate Dializer. I heard that a few years before I started these Plate Dializers had to be sterilized and reused every time. This no doubt led to many infections.
I read a book on dialysis about an even earlier time when the machines were as big as the bed and you had to be on for twelve hours. I also read that dialysis was invented during the second world war.
I was on Hemo-dialysis for 15 years at HSC. Up to that time I had six fistulas -- 3 in each arm. The one in the lower left arm was removed after two months because of severe infection. In 1997 I started Peritoneal dialysis as I had no place left for access for Hemo.
In early October, 1997 I had a few minor strokes and lost most of the vision in my right eye. In August, 2005 I had a few more minor strokes and lost 90% of the vision in my left eye. In September,2005 I had Peritonitis and my line had to be removed. Because of this and the vision loss I had to return to Hemo. For access I have a catheter in my chest on the right hand side. The vision loss qualifies me as legally blind. Someone reads and types all my computer messages. I as yet do not know braille and there is a long waiting list for those wishing to to learn. This is why my Grand-niece typed out the last message and someone else is typing this one. Yes, there is technology and equipment to upgrade the computer for visually impaired persons but this is very expensive.
In 1983 I was given a transplant but it hemorrhaged and only lasted a month and had to be removed. This was a little disappointing at first but I think it worked out better in the long run. I was on Prednisone for the Lupus and if the transplant had taken I would have had to stay on it for the rest of my life. As it turned out, the dialysis puts the Lupus in remission and therefore I was able to wean myself off the Prednisone and come completely off by January, 1985. I have had to take the Prednisone a few times since. Like Epoman I prefer to stay on dialysis. It is a sure thing.
