I am a 58yrs old man from Orlando FL and I was diagnosed with stage 3 ckd 4 yrs. ago. I went into stage 4 a year ago. I got my fistula this last July. Then last month I reached end stage. Gfr was 14 last month and is 11 now. So HD is next. My potassium, phosphates and magnesium are on the high side of normal (this kinda makes the DR.s look at me funny). I felt worse when I was in stage 4 then I do now. My hemoglobin is 11.2 but that fluctuates all over the place. I found this site just looking for a forum to talk to people like me. I’m not gonna let ckd get the best of me. So let’s start with HD then I’m gonna get a kidney. I win in the end. So let’s do this!

Hello Churchboy123, welcome to the site.

I’m not gonna let ckd get the best of me. So let’s start with HD then I’m gonna get a kidney. I win in the end. So let’s do this!

Great attitude.

Welcome to IHD!

Learning how to eat, or better put, what NOT to eat, limiting the potassium and Religiously taking Binders for the Phosphorus in the food that your do eat, are critical in keeping your health.

Limiting your fluids, not only what you drink, but also considering how much fluid is in the foods we eat.  Keeping that total volume as low as possible so that the amount of fluid needing to be removed by Dialysis to an absolute minimum as also critical to doing well on Dialysis.

Large fluid take-offs 'shock' all the bodily systems, can be damaging to the heart and also further reducing any residual kidney function.

Stay vigilant and strict with your diet and fluids and you will do better.  An added benefit, I have begun to slowly lose some of that excess weight I have always carried.  Even a pound a month and it is GONE, forever!

Take Care,

It seems you have reached the point dialysis is inevitable the start date is not.  If you go to a dietitian and get a renal friendly diet you can put off the start of Dialysys for a while.  When I was at the point you are I was two years away from starting Dialysys.  My Nephrologist every month told me it was time to start.  I felt good so why start now, when I showed my first symptom I started.  But I had 2 years of non Dialysys living which was great.  Believe me you don’t want to start a day sooner then you need to.  Also you don’t want to delay past the point of showing symtoms.  Good Luck.

Starting PD earlier than necessary can preserve residual function for a longer period of time.

Starting HD earlier has not been shown to have benefits, and speeds the decline of any residual you may have.
