Hello everyone, yet another new member reporting in. I'm a 50 year old male, taking care of my wife (also 50) who has diabetes and ESRD. She just had the PD catheter put in and we will be starting the home dialysis early next month, I think. We've also got two school-age kids which kind of adds to the burden. But hey, we're all doing the best we can. Looking forward to learning about this forum.

Welcome to the site StarryNight16. My best to your wife. As to those kids: I thought the whole idea of having kids was to look after you when you get older, I'm sure that can be stretched to include "look after you when you have diabetes and ESRD".

Dialysis affects the entire family.  Doctors don't usually tell you that.

Welcome to IHD!

Often Kids will be scared when a Parent has to have medical treatments.  Worried that Mom could easily die.  This can be quite traumatic.  Kids today are much smarter than past generations.  They learn so much more and so much quicker, they can understand if things are spelled out clear enough.

Kidney School is a great web site to learn about the kidneys, what they do, how, what goes wrong, and how the different types of dialysis can be used to treat the person, keeping them alive and well.  Diet is very important, and this is also spelled out.

http://kidneyschool.org/

Explain what is going on, suggest the kids spend a little time studying at Kidney school.  They will quickly lose their fears and understand exactly what and why Mom has to take care of herself doing PD.

Take Care,
