My name is Thomas Lehn and come from Germany. I am dialysispatient for 46 years.
 
I am married  and I live in Ingelheim near Mainz. I work as a system engineer for over 36 years in the LDI (Landesbetrieb Daten und Information) in Mainz. I'm on dialysis since 1970 and therefore I am the youngest man in the world who has a chronical kidney disease and lives on the longest of renal replacement therapy - the Hämodialysis. Since 1983 I dialyze at home with my wife.
I was never kidney transplanted.
 
Now, 46 years ago, when I was undergoing dialysis, the dialysis process for the former nurse was a complex and dangerous treatment. The nurses learned to finally deal with it new maschines. Similarly, the nursing staff for the difficult medical supervision was responsible.
 
Why am I telling you this? Training sessions did not exist! It was the pure reality!

46 years is quite a feat, ThomLehn.  I wish you many more years of record-breaking success--through dialysis or through transplant.  I hope most of us have such good luck too.

1985 transplant from dad
1998 lost dads kidney, start PD
2003 peritineum burst, back to hemo
2012 start Nxstage home hemo
2020 start Gambro AK96

       still on waitinglist, still ok I think

Hello ThomLehn and welcome to IHD.
To be quite honest, I can hardly imagine how very difficult dialysis must have been when you started over 46 years ago!!!
... I have seen your website and I agree with you that the "Organhandel" of poor people's organs to "paying customers" is quite despicable...
... You also write on your website that dialysis is kinder to the body than transplant... What makes you think that way?
Is a transplant not kinder to the body in the long run? ... And is the survival chance for kidney-transplantees not better?
What do you think?

WOW, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome... To IHD.  That is great.  So how old were you when you started? or How old are you now and I can do the math.  Next year will be 30 for me.  A lot of changes since 1987 but none in the last 10 years.

Admin for IHateDialysis 2008 - 2014, retired.
Jenna is our daughter, bad bladder damaged her kidneys.
Was on in-center hemodialysis 2003-2007.
7 yr transplant lost due to rejection.
She did PD Sept. 2013 - July 2017
Found a swap living donor using social media, friends, family.
New kidney in a paired donation swap July 26, 2017.

Uninterrupted in-center (self-care) hemodialysis since 1982 -- 34 YEARS on March 3, 2016 !!

No transplant.  Not yet, anyway.  Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  ;)
I make films.

Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.)
Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat   5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk
Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

Started with NxStage - April 2015
6 Fistula grams in 5 months,  New upper fistula Oct 2015, But now old one working fine, until August 2016 and it stopped, tried an angio, still no good
Started on new fistula .

Husband had ESRD with Type I Diabetes -Insulin Dependent.
I was his care-partner for home hemodialysis using Nxstage December 2013-July 2016.
He went back to doing in-center July 2016.
After more than 150 days of being hospitalized with complications from Diabetes, my beloved husband's heart stopped and he passed away 06-08-21. He was only 63.
